Snow Guards for Metal Roofing

One of the most common modern roofing materials is metal roofing - a modern sheet roofing material made from a solid metal sheet with a thickness of 0.55–0.7 mm. Metal roofing is widely used on roofs of various slopes and configurations. Many roofs have a steep incline, which leads to avalanche-like snow slides in winter and early spring.

One essential element of such roofs are snow guards. They can be installed systemically (along the entire roof perimeter) or locally (e.g., above the house entrance). Snow guards are widely installed on private homes in regions with heavy snowfall winters.

But this should not reassure homeowners in southern regions. Even a single snow slide can damage gutters or, worse, cause injury to people. Roof safety has long been a top priority in the West, and this trend is gradually spreading to Russia.

Why Snow Guards Are Necessary on Metal Roofing

Among all components of metal roofing, snow guards play a particularly important role. Modern sloped roofs often include numerous elements of active safety: walkways, ladders, hatches, and railings. These useful inventions protect people who are on the roof for work or necessity, knowingly accepting risk. Snow guards, however, protect those who are unaware of the danger, simply passing by.

Since, as previously mentioned, avalanche-like snow slides can cause serious damage to the house and property located directly under the roof overhang, it is recommended that snow guards be installed along the entire roof perimeter. Areas that need special protection include roof overhangs above the house entrance, garage access, or car parking spots.

The nature of metal roofing promotes fast and unexpected snow slides. This happens because the surface is not only smooth but also highly sensitive to temperature changes. As soon as temperatures drop below zero, the metal roof becomes structurally identical to a roller—almost nothing sticks to it. Imagine a snow mass weighing several hundred kilograms per square meter!

Types of Snow Guards

Snow guards installed on metal roofs help retain accumulated snow until it fully melts. The most common types are tubular, plate, and mesh structures. The tubular snow guard is widely recognized as the best option due to its simple design and highest strength.

Structurally, tubular snow guards consist of two steel tubes connected by steel supports made from sheet metal. The supports may vary slightly depending on the profile of the metal roofing used. For example, snow guards designed for Monterrey-style roofing feature a special flange that eliminates the need for additional wooden battens in the underlayment for mounting.
