How to Decorate an Interior in the Hygge Style

We tell you how to embrace the Scandinavian philosophy of comfort and create a sense of simple and affordable happiness at home

The word hygge (pronounced "hug-ga") in Danish and Norwegian means coziness, comfort, togetherness, and well-being. People living in Scandinavian countries, just like us, are familiar with the feeling of endless winter, but they have learned to cope with it. And we will learn from them. Together with Ekaterina Schwarz, we explain what this method is – hygge.

Ekaterina Gurova-Shvarts, Architect: Believes that with decoration you can tell a fascinating story about the people living in your home through design, not necessarily a true one

Inspiration: Idea for Interior Decoration

I was inspired by a photo of a typical Scandinavian living room-kitchen. The absence of curtains on the windows, walls in the color of a cloudy sky, wooden floor, branches in a vase on the table – all of this is the basis of an interior in the tones of late autumn outside the window. The warm glow of candles, a tweed rug, and a cozy blanket on the sofa are the melodic response to warmth and comfort.

Let's Start Working: Creating a Moodboard

A moodboard is an unverbal story from a designer about ideas and associations. My interior will feature a white minimalist kitchen, a rug on a wooden floor, candles, handmade blankets, and several unusual lamps.

Implementation

To optimize the process, I go to Leroy Merlin where you can quickly and affordably buy everything: from kitchen appliances and building materials to candles and sofa cushions.

A white kitchen won't dominate the living room interior. It is functional, elegant, and very convenient to use. Using paint in the color of "Storm Cloud" will blend the room's background with the sky outside the window. The natural wood color brings the interior closer to nature. A white rug will look especially good on a wooden floor.

Complete the interior with a lamp with cozy lighting and branches reminiscent of fireplace kindling. A great choice are cushions made of simple fabric resembling unbleached linen, as well as handmade and fur cushions. Lamps with built-in LED candles are safe to light on a table, windowsill, or even on the floor. Blankets that look like they were actually knitted by hand are exactly what you need. And of course, a living plant, even a small one, adds life to the interior.

Design Hacks to Add More Hygge to Your Interior

Use your windowsill. If it's wide, spread out cushions and read while it's still light; if narrow, keep plants, books, and lights on it. Light up a Christmas garland (but not colorful or blinking). Don't ask why. Just light it, even if the New Year holidays are already over. Don't be afraid to add garden furniture – a simple wooden table or even a bench. In hygge interior, such an item sounds wonderful. Bake aromatic cinnamon buns and prepare fragrant hot cocoa. Invite friends to your comfort. Hygge is about communication! For setting the table, use linen napkins, small baskets, pinecones, and branches. If your interior feels too colorless, add a vibrant item such as a salad-green or mustard-colored armchair. When it gets dark, light up your lamps on the windowsill. Then, not only will your apartment be cozy, but also the street you live on. And one day, you'll see such lanterns in windows of a house across the street. Remember – hygge brings people together!

Arranging Furniture and Decor

  • The walls in the color of storm clouds and oak wooden floor will create that natural background for us.
  • A snow-white kitchen will shine on it, and the mood in the dining-living room area will become fresh and energetic. Living plants and fun lights belong here.
  • In the living room area, we'll set up evening time: place dark soft furniture slightly darker than storm clouds, and a black standing lamp for local lighting. A wool rug, fur and cotton cushions, and soft handmade blankets will make this zone warm, while candles and lanterns will add comfort and festivity to the whole room.
  • We hang large photographs on the wall: let them show the sky or something resembling a landscape outside the window.
