What Else Can Ruin a Good Interior: Professionals' Opinions
A good interior should not only be beautiful but also well-thought-out. Professionals shared their experience and talked about five things people often forget when decorating an interior.
Cheap or impractical finishing
"Always check the quality of materials and construction work — otherwise, you'll soon have cracking grout or peeling wallpaper," says designer Victoria Ivanova. "And don't choose materials that are hard to maintain. For example, colored plumbing is trendy now, but lime scale will constantly form on it with hard water. "
Electrical panels, access hatches, and appliance cables
"Always hide them," advises designer Margarita Fomina. "Hide electrical panels in wardrobes or cupboards. For access hatches, install decorative doors and mirrors, and tile over the hatch in the bathroom. For hiding cables, I recommend cable channels that can be planned from the beginning of the renovation."
Monochrome color palette
"Beige can nullify the efforts of even the most genius designer," says designer Anastasia Shabelskaya. "With it, an apartment will look like a room in a three-star hotel. Don't be afraid to use color in the interior — bright shades can be muted with pastels or dark tones. The second option is even more modern,"
Incorrect combinations
"Often clients want to add everything and at once to the interior. But even printed bedding can 'kill' an interior with calm tones," says Victoria Ivanova. "Always think about appropriateness of combinations and don't overdo it in the interior. The main thing is to stop in time and leave some air."
Thin ceiling cornices
"Thin ceiling cornices devalue an interior," shares Margarita Fomina. "If the ceiling height in the room is low, I either completely avoid cornices or use tall ones painted to match the walls. It not only looks stylish but also visually lifts the ceiling,"
Checklist: What to Pay Attention to When Decorating an Interior?
- The finishing should be of good quality and practical. Don't choose the cheapest options, but also keep in mind practicality when following trends.
- Make sure that electrical panels, access hatches, and appliance cables are hidden.
- Don't rely on beige: add more color to the interior. Balance bright colors with pastel and dark tones.
- Always think about combinations: how appropriate are they in your interior? Don't overdo it with details — leave some air.
- Abandon thin ceiling cornices or replace them with wide ones in wall color.
