How to Decorate an Interior with a Fireplace: Pro Idea

With the appearance of electric fireplaces and decorative surrounds for them, a fireplace in interior design has long since ceased to be a luxury item. Designer Olga Manakova shares her idea for placing a fireplace in a living room.

Inspiration: Design Idea

For inspiration, I chose an interior with turquoise walls, an accent chandelier made of brass, and a fireplace built into a wall niche covered with aged mirrors.

Starting the project: Creating a mood board

Our mood board reflects the overall concept, variety of textures, and color palette of the future interior. We dilute the active turquoise color with various shades of gray and beige, add burgundy and terracotta notes. The dominant elements will be the fireplace and a striking chandelier.

Implementation

The main character of our interior is an electric fireplace with a decorative portal. Parquet in warm honey tones. On the parquet floor, a carpet with a texture and subdued print that diversifies and enriches our interior. An original chandelier with golden crackle will add sophistication, and its shape will set the rhythm. A bookshelf is a very functional piece of furniture, and two shelves on either side of the fireplace will make the overall composition symmetrical. A table lamp with a fabric shade and ceramic base in turquoise color — in harmony with the accent wall. A mirror with a golden frame will make the room look elegant and festive. Special attention is paid to textile decor, which makes an interior livable. Cream curtains in combination with turquoise ones will bring harmony and balance.

To calculate the approximate cost of renovation, I took the size of the living room 25 square meters.

Lifestyle Hacks: How to Seamlessly Incorporate a Fireplace into Your Interior

A fireplace does not have to be located in the center of the main wall in a living room; it can also fit into an asymmetrical space. A special touch for professionals is to pair a classic fireplace with modern art in the interior. Just add ordinary logs to a faux fireplace with a cool marble surround — and a relaxation and cozy zone appears in the room. An interesting approach is to paint the decorative portal of the fireplace in the same tone as the wall, making it an accent.

A fireplace can be perfectly integrated into a minimalist interior without expensive materials. Construct the structure from gypsum board for painting and cover it with tiles. The fireplace doesn’t have to be the main character in the living room. But would a mirror look as effective without it?

Arranging Furniture and Decor

Neutral wall colors will allow us to add more color when decorating — in the form of cushions, a sofa, or sconces, as in our case. We paint the accent wall behind the fireplace turquoise, and on its surround we place a table lamp, books, or framed photos. It's better to position bookshelves symmetrically on either side of the fireplace, which makes the entire composition more cohesive. The connecting element in our interior will be curtains in two colors — the main neutral and the accent turquoise.
