Your first task is to sort your clothes. There's a great way to sort them — just arrange them into these categories.

  • Items you can keep. Everything you use frequently.
  • Throw away. Everything that is broken, outdated, or definitely won't be useful to anyone.
  • Give away or sell. Clothes in good condition that you no longer need but others might find useful.
  • Hard to part with. Items you're not ready to let go of yet, but may be able to gift in a year. Don't forget to set a date when you plan to give them away and store them for now.

Sort your clothes into new categories now

Most commonly, clothes are divided into undergarments, loungewear and sportswear, occasion wear, workwear, outerwear, off-season items, and accessories.

Put everything unnecessary on top

Don’t store often-used items far away. Put the rest on upper shelves. For example: at the bottom — shoes, on top — off-season clothes, guest blankets, pillows, bedding, items from the “hard to part with” category, clothes that are too big for kids.

  • Hang clothes you wear in the current season on shelves and hangers.
  • Clothes from the same category should be in one place.
  • Hang clothes from longest to shortest and from lowest to highest: first — dresses, skirts, pants, then — t-shirts, shirts, sweaters, cardigans.
  • Within each category, hang clothes from thinner fabric to thicker and from lighter to darker shades. Or vice versa, depending on what you wear more often.

Fold clothes

Clothes stored on shelves and in drawers should be neatly folded and placed into boxes or containers. If you're unsure how to fold them compactly, check out this video.

Label the boxes

Clearly label all containers and boxes, especially if the closet stores clothes for multiple family members. For example: “sweaters — Dasha”, “t-shirts — Misha”. You can even label shelves and make sure clothes go back to their designated spots.
