Insights from a Designer

If everything in your interior is thought out to the smallest detail, but it still feels like something is missing, Anna Rytova explains what might be the issue and how to fix it.

Anna Rytova is an architecture and interior design expert, and the head of the studio "New Place"

Contrast

Regardless of the interior style and your color preferences, contrast should be present in every room. Light colors can contrast with dark ones, or hard-surface items with soft ones. Contrast helps direct attention and set accents. Use this technique to prevent rooms from looking bland or overly similar.

Texture

Texture in an interior is brought in by textiles (carpets, cushions, bed linens, and curtains) and decor — paintings, mirrors, and other accessories.

Definition

Texture is a visual difference. For example, the texture of ceramic tiles is a pattern, and the texture of wood is the natural grain of the wood on the cut surface.

To understand what textures are missing in a room, take a photo of it and review the image a few days later. This will help you decide what to change in the interior.

Vital Energy

The final touches in interior design are items that add individuality and make a space feel lived-in. Unfortunately, these elements are often completely missing, which ruins the interior.

These can be souvenirs and memorabilia — for example, a beautiful stone found at a local lake. Plants can also contribute vital energy.
