Interior 2018: Nine Trends That Are No Longer Relevant
We tell you what to avoid in modern design projects
Fashion changes too quickly. Solutions that were relevant just a year or two ago are now outdated. In our selection, we've gathered 9 trends to forget about.
Directed Light
Directed light gained popularity several years ago. It was used to zone rooms and create accents in interior design. Today, built-in spotlights with diffused light are more in vogue.
Design: Evgenia PotapovaBamboo Finishing
It entered the fashion trend after the rise in popularity of eco-interiors, but it soon became clear that bamboo is not the best choice for finishing. Sensitivity to direct sunlight, humidity, temperature fluctuations—and all this at a high cost. The building materials market offers other, more cost-effective and quality solutions.
Besides that, the level of eco-friendliness in interiors has reached a new stage: natural materials are being replaced with safe analogs.

Granite Countertops
Granite and the work involved with it are becoming more expensive every year. It is quite possible that in 2018, quartz agglomerates or artificial acrylic stones will replace granite in design projects.
Design: Home OwnersOpen Shelves and Cabinets on the Kitchen
They look great in photos, but not in real life. You have to carefully select dishes and accessories, which is hard without a professional designer.
Open shelves are a good way to save money on kitchen setup, but they're not very convenient. Dust and oil drops accumulate quickly on surfaces—even with a powerful extractor.
Design: Stadshem StudioHandmade Storage Systems
At one time, the handmade format was popular. Today we understand that a shelf made from hooks and wood is not always the best interior decoration. It's much easier and more cost-effective to keep an eye on sales in mass-market stores.

Furniture Made from Construction Pallets
It's too often that furniture made from construction pallets or rough boards appears in design projects of various styles. In 2018, it is relevant only for the loft and industrial interior styles.
Design: Olga Borovikova and Irina NikolaevaEastern Style
In its pure form, it has long lost relevance. Accessories in the Eastern style can be used as accents: a wall painting or a carpet.
Design: Valeriya BelousovaTropical Prints
They took over the minds of professionals and design lovers in the middle of last year. This summer, tropics will no longer be relevant, so don't rush to buy palm trees and accessories with exotic patterns.
Design: Anna VerevennikovaTiles in Patchwork Style
This season, rhombus, hexagon, and scale-shaped tiles are in style.
