6 Tips on How to Update an Outdated Interior
It seems like your interior is no longer in trend? We tell you what to pay attention to and how to refresh outdated decor
It's time to stop betting on beige color, hanging multi-layered curtains, and saving on the number of light fixtures. Together with Leroy Merlin experts, we tell you what is no longer in style and how to replace it.
Get rid of heavy textile on windows
Curtains with large pleats made from rigid fabrics like taffeta should be lightened. In any apartment, especially a small one, an elaborate window treatment with draping significantly reduces space and blocks natural light.
What to replace it with? Today's rule for windows is: the simpler, the better, especially in small rooms. If you really love folds, you can make them from lighter fabrics gathered on ribbon. Instead of plush, taffeta, and jacquard for night curtains, use roller blinds or narrow panels made from linen fabric.

Use modern storage systems
Clumsy furniture wall units take up more than one square meter — the first reason to get rid of them. The second reason is that such a wall unit with a sofa opposite it has become so familiar that it no longer looks like an interior decoration.
What to replace it with? You can use suspended cabinets, open shelves, display cabinets with lighting, elegant niches. With these, you not only save room space but also make your interior more functional.

Create several lighting scenarios
No matter what the single light source is — a large chandelier or a trendy light fixture in Scandinavian style — it won't be able to illuminate the entire room. Comfortable lighting should be evenly distributed throughout the room perimeter.
What to replace it with? You can keep the chandelier in place, but definitely add additional light sources: a floor lamp near the sofa or armchair, a wall sconce or table lamp in a reading corner, several strands of lights for a more romantic atmosphere.

Add color accents
In the pursuit of a universal neutral decor, apartment owners often choose beige finishes and furniture. In most cases, the result is rather disappointing — the interior becomes simply boring.
What to replace it with? Instead of monochromatic beige wallpaper, choose more daring options — with an interesting pattern or rich tones (currently in style: dark blue, indigo, lilac, bordeaux). Or replace it entirely with paint: a worn-out interior can easily be refreshed without a major renovation.

Make a bet on a flat ceiling
Once such a ceiling was trendy, just like many built-in spotlights or multicolored perimeter lighting. Today, this is already the 'past era'.
What to replace it with? A flat white or colored ceiling is what's trendy now. Equip it with recessed lights, spotlights on a rail, or a traditional chandelier — this way, it will look much more appealing.

Experiment with textiles
Of course, it's convenient to buy a ready-made set of decorative pillowcases and duvets and not complicate your life by choosing shades and textures. But, agree, such universality does not benefit the interior.
What to replace it with? Experiment: buy several pillowcases in different sizes and designs (solid color, geometric print, interesting texture), create a composition on the bed or sofa. Ensure they have something in common — color, pattern, or material. Add a knitted or woolen throw in a matching tone — and enjoy the result.
