Is your favorite sofa losing its appealing look, and stains from tea or coffee bother you? We explain what you're doing wrong

Buying beautiful soft furniture is half the battle. The hardest part is keeping it in its original condition for as long as possible. We present the 6 most common mistakes in caring for soft furniture that affect its lifespan and appearance.

You Place Furniture Near Heat Sources and Light

Soft furniture does not tolerate high temperatures, so never place it near radiators or heaters. This causes the materials to dry out and become more fragile, reducing their lifespan.

Sunlight also negatively affects soft furniture: fabric fades unevenly.

You Forget to Flip and Rotate Cushions

This negatively impacts the shape of sofa cushions. Yes, they will wear out eventually. But to delay this, flip cushions at least once a week. This way, they will deform less and maintain their aesthetic appearance longer.

You Forget to Remove Dust from Hard-to-Reach Areas

Dust tends to accumulate in the seams of soft furniture. This can be avoided by vacuuming hard-to-reach areas once a week with special attachments.

A brush wrapped in a cloth can also be used for cleaning. Dampen the cloth with salt water (1 teaspoon of salt per 1 liter of water) and wipe the upholstery several times in one direction. If you don't have cloth at hand, dampen a rag in a solution of vinegar and water (1–2 tablespoons of vinegar per 1 liter of water) and gently brush away the dust.

You Don't Remove Stains from Furniture Surfaces in Time

Any stains or dirt should be removed immediately, not waiting for them to dry. If you spill a liquid, blot the area with a dry fabric first, then carefully remove it using a brush or sponge and soapy solution, moving from the edges toward the center. Then blot dry with a clean cloth. You must not rub the stain vigorously, or it will penetrate deep into the fibers.

You Leave Dyeing Items on the Sofa

Or sit on it in jeans that can stain the furniture surface. To avoid stains on the sofa or armchair, place a blanket or throw over it. It's better not to throw fresh newspapers on soft furniture – their place is on a coffee table.

Your Children Jump on the Sofa

This habit can damage springs or break the sofa base if there are no springs. Therefore, offer kids a bounce pad instead, otherwise you'll need to buy new furniture soon after purchase.
