A regular wardrobe and a closet are not the same thing.

If the first is intended exclusively for storing clothes, the second represents a separate area where you can calmly change clothes and select what you need. Therefore, it is not surprising that organizing a closet in the bedroom is the dream of any housewife. But how to make the dressing area convenient and harmoniously fit into the interior?

Choosing a location, planning, and determining dimensions

A closet in the bedroom can be arranged in two ways: separate part of the room with a gypsum board partition (the division can be done using a tall piece of furniture, curtains, or sliding doors) or use a deep (50-90 cm) built-in open wardrobe. The size of the closet depends on the area of the bedroom. If it is small, then 3-4 sq. m, for a spacious room - 6-8 sq. m. The layout of the closet is related to the area of the room, the location of doors and windows. There are several options.

In a line

The closet will resemble a standard wardrobe-cupboard, which differs from it by the absence of doors, instead of which a gypsum board partition can be placed at some distance. Inside there should be free space to move around the shelves and hangers. This layout is suitable for a rectangular bedroom: the closet is arranged along the wall.

In two parallel lines

In this case, shelves are located behind a solid partition on one wall, and hangers along the second wall, which is very convenient because all clothes are visible and easy to reach. Another advantage is greater capacity. The parallel layout is suitable for bedrooms with relatively large area.

Angular layout of the closet

This type of layout allows most rationally use the space in the room. In this case, a gypsum board partition separates the corner and storage systems are arranged inside. For zone separation, sliding doors can be used, including radius type, which will add style to the interior.

What is inside the closet

The storage area should be ergonomic and compact. Today, there is a wide selection of elements for wardrobes on the market. These are various shelves, hangers, guides, rods, baskets and other details. It should be noted that the best closet is one made to order or manufactured by yourself. Only in this case can you most effectively use the available space and fully meet your needs in a storage system. Usually, a closet implies the presence of the following working zones:

  • space for clothing storage: rod with hangers placed at a depth of 50-60 cm - if these dimensions are excessive (i.e., you can only allocate no more than 40 cm), then a pantograph (for tall wardrobe) or sliding rod will be needed;
  • linen shelves: a closed cabinet with a depth of 40-50 cm will suit;
  • space for hanging pants, ties, belts;
  • sideboards (shelves with boxes or pull-out baskets) with drawers for small items;
  • shoe cabinet: mesh shelves (depth no more than 40 cm).

How to best finish the closet

The main attention here is given to the external decoration of the dividing partition or screen. In the latter case, dense curtain fabric is used (preferably one that matches the window curtains in color). It is secured on cornices attached to the ceiling. If the partition is made of gypsum board, then wallpapers, wooden panels, plastic or MDF panels, and laminated plywood are used for its finishing. Another option is using sliding doors. In this case, it is desirable that they be mirror on the inside.

Lighting considerations

If chosen correctly, the color of clothes will not be distorted, and you will find the right item quickly. You need to take into account that in most closets there are no windows, so several points should be considered:

  • use several spot LED lights placed at different levels (a small chandelier can be hung in the center);
  • install a large mirror;
  • if there are bulky boxes, it is desirable to install autonomous lighting powered by batteries inside them;
  • on a small area, wall lights should not be installed as they only get in the way.

What doors to install in the closet

The construction can be hinged or sliding. If the first option is used, the doors should open outward. In this case, you can install a standard interior door. The advantage of such doors is that there is a wide selection of products and their price is quite affordable. The second option is sliding constructions. Their installation will save space, but they cost more, and their installation requires more time and possibly the involvement of specialists.

Setting up a closet in a small bedroom

First, you need to determine the dimensions: it is recommended to make (or buy) wardrobes up to the ceiling. Inside - the upper compartment with a pantograph. It is preferable to arrange an angular structure: all of this will allow more rational use of the area. Be sure to hang a large mirror (preferably with backlighting): it will visually expand the space. The same effect is achieved with light tones: milk, beige, light pink and others.

Closet in a narrow bedroom

When arranging a narrow room, first refuse hinged doors: use only sliding ones. If the space allows, then in a closet with a partition apply a parallel two-row layout; if not, use a single-row layout. It is better to make the wardrobe built-in, and the doors leading into the closet - sliding. If they are located in the middle of the longest wall, then place the wardrobe opposite: this will allow you to find the right item faster. As for the interior, the best solution is minimalist or Scandinavian style.

How to make a gypsum board closet by yourself

In addition to the Gypsum Board Panels (GKP) itself, you need to purchase metal L-shaped profiles and hangers for them. After determining the location of the future partition, draw lines on the walls, floor and ceiling using a plumb line or laser level. They are fixed with hangers. The Gypsum Board panels are secured with self-tapping screws starting from one side of the L-profile: this gives the possibility to run electrical wiring or, for example, a phone cable in the formed cavity. Also do not forget to install switches and sockets - they will be needed in the closet. Then close the GKP on the other side. Now you need to tape the joints with masking tape. Then fill all indentations, including those above the screw heads. After achieving a perfectly smooth surface after sanding, you can proceed to finishing the surface with wallpapers, panels or decorative plaster. At the final stage, install brackets and baseboards, and then install the doors.

Thus, even in a small bedroom you can set up a comfortable and functional closet by yourself. You can store not only clothes in it, but also rarely used items. This helps maintain order in the house and ensures quick finding of the needed item.
