Famous designer — about love for dark colors, witty decor, and living plants

"Those who once cross over to the dark side never return," says Abigail Ahern about her style. She advises to surprise and take risks.

Don't fear dark shades

Dark colors have colored my home (and my life!) forever. They are enveloping and glamorous, making the space more lively and giving it a bright, slightly dramatic character.

Decorate your home yourself

To change the interior, there is no need to make large investments. There's nothing complicated about learning how to paint walls and paste wallpaper. Imagination can dramatically transform even the most unremarkable room.

Experiment with lighting

Unusual lamps are my favorite trick for creating atmosphere. Don't limit yourself to overhead lighting only: use spotlights and more different types of lamps.

Add brightness

Put your bet on brightly colored furniture. Against dark walls, it will look superb.

Focus on textures

Textiles make the interior cohesive. I particularly like pronounced textures, whether it's cozy merino carpets or knitted pillows.

Funny and witty decor

Bring joy and lightness into the interior. Collect decor leisurely: bring from travels, make yourself. Don't hide your collections and vintage items — that's what makes the interior very personal.

Center of attention — flowers and greenery

My favorites are rare plant species and lush foliage. Gathered together, they make an ordinary interior unique.

Surprise

Work on details — thanks to them, the interior becomes alive and interesting. Fill your home with items you want to examine closely.

Take risks

Only by daring to take a risk can one receive the highest reward.

Have patience

I don't have any at all. But experience taught me not to do anything in a hurry — give yourself time and any task will be crowned with success.
