Internal Organization of Wardrobe-Cupboard in Hallway

The popularity of wardrobes is easy to explain: versatility, convenience, functionality and elegance.

Therefore, it is not surprising that such furniture items suit any room: children's room, living room or bedroom. But most often this construction can be seen in the hallway: the item takes up little space (thanks to the presence of sliding doors) and has functional internal organization in the form of hangers, shelves, drawers. What should your wardrobe-cupboard be like inside?

Construction

First, you need to determine the dimensions of the construction. There are a couple of options: for a regular, i.e. spacious hallway and small one, whose width does not exceed a meter.

  1. If there is enough space, a wardrobe where hangers are attached to longitudinal pipes - rods, mounted on the ends of the furniture item. In this case, the depth of the wardrobe should be at least 0.65 m. Add another 0.1 m for guides along which the doors move. As a result – 0.75 m.
  2. When selecting a construction for a small hallway (e.g., in a 'Khrushchyovka' or panel house of old type), you can buy (order, make yourself) an item where the rods for hangers are arranged crosswise – their length will be 35 cm. For opening mechanism, another 10 cm is needed. As a result, it becomes 45 cm. This is quite enough to accommodate not only outerwear but also footwear. In this case, it is advisable to use an integrated structure that saves space.

Next is the length of the wardrobe. It is directly related to the number of household members. In a wide construction for a spacious hallway, 15 cm of rod length is enough per hanger. If there are three people in the family and each has a pair of clothes, it is easy to calculate: 3x2x12 = 72 cm. Add wall thickness and gaps, the result is 80 cm.

It's different if the wardrobe is narrow, 45 cm. In this case, each family member will get a separate crosswise rod. One place requires 45 cm (shoulder width of an average man). The result is a construction 135 cm long. If that's too much, you can arrange clothes in a chess pattern (at the bottom – children's clothes, at the top – for adults). In this case, use a reducing coefficient of 0.7. Result – 94.5 cm, i.e., a standard meter

Layout and Internal Organization of Wardrobe-Cupboard

The entire internal volume of the construction can be divided into three parts. This is the lower compartment, intended for footwear, the middle section – for frequently used items, and the attic space, designed to store rarely used things. Each of these storage zones should be considered separately.

Middle Section

This part can also be divided into several sectors, the largest of which is allocated for upper garments. Also, here you can store shirts, trousers, skirts and so on. Therefore, if the space in the hallway allows it, it is better to buy a construction where the middle zone has several compartments of different heights:

  • 1.8 m: for long coats, jackets, fur;
  • 1.3-1.5 m: for jackets and similar outerwear;
  • 0.8-1.1 m: for shirts, blouses.

If the wardrobe-cupboard design includes shelves, they can be used to store sweaters, jumpers, i.e. those items that stretch when hung. Optimal dimensions of such a compartment:

  • width 50-60 cm;
  • height 40 cm.

It is worth mentioning separately the internal organization of wardrobes-cupes with a height of 2.2 meters or more. It is desirable to purchase a construction with a pantograph – a special mechanism that allows the rod from the upper part of the compartment to be extended.

Upper Part

The average height of the attic is 50 cm. On them, suitcases, travel bags, boxes containing seasonal clothes and other rarely used items are usually placed. If the upper part is sufficiently long, you can put skis on the attic shelves.

Lower Section

This is the footwear section, the optimal height of which is 20-30 cm. In this area, mesh metal shelves with a slight forward tilt can be placed. Using a mesh structure prevents dust and dirt from accumulating on the footwear. It should be noted that the lower tier can be equipped with a slide-out mesh shelf, which opens like a hinged door – very convenient.

Drawers and Shelves for Small Items

It's quite good if the wardrobe-cupboard design includes additional places for storing items. You can put accessories like ties, socks or belts in the drawers. When buying, pay attention to the sliding mechanism: its rails should not hinder free drawer movement. It is desirable that their handles are recessed inside. Also, pay attention to the height - its maximum value should not exceed 110 cm: otherwise it will be inconvenient to use the drawer.

In terms of shelves, pay attention to their thickness. For the upper tier, this parameter should be at least 3 cm, since heavy items like suitcases (which may not be empty) are usually stored on attic shelves. For shelves in other compartments, the thickness can be much less.

Ironing Board and Vacuum Cleaner

These items can also be stored in a wardrobe-cupboard located in the hallway. Usually, vacuum cleaners and ironing boards belong to the category of items for which it is difficult to find space in an apartment. The best solution is to order a construction where there will be a long and tall compartment for the board, as well as a separate section for the vacuum cleaner. In this case, you can consider the dimensions of your existing unit.

Details

When buying or ordering the described furniture item, it is worth paying attention to some details to make using the item comfortable.

  1. The number of sliding doors should correspond to the number of vertical compartments. The exception is when the door panel is wide enough. But then it is not recommended to configure (if the wardrobe is ordered or made from scratch) a structure where the compartment with shelves is located in the center, between vertical compartments.
  2. The width of sliding drawers should be slightly less than the size of the door opening, otherwise it will not be possible to pull them out (this does not apply to four-door models).
  3. When choosing drawers, it is better to prefer items equipped with a ball bearing mechanism. These systems operate silently, the movement is smooth, and their service life is longer.
  4. For shelves with a length of 80 cm or more, partitions should be made, otherwise the racks will bend under the weight of the items placed on them.
  5. If it is planned to equip the wardrobe with such accessories as a tie rack or baskets, then calculate their sizes in advance to ensure they match the dimensions of the entire construction.
  6. It is recommended to provide lighting mounted in the door frame. This will help quickly find the desired item. It is better to use LED or halogen spotlights.
  7. The construction will be stronger and more rigid if the rods for upper garments are attached to the side walls of this furniture item.

Features of Internal Organization of Built-in Wardrobe-Cupboard

With one disadvantage (this construction cannot be moved to another place), built-in furniture has many advantages. Such a wardrobe completely fills the space, saving area. The width of the construction can be 45 cm, while for a standard item this parameter is not less than 60 cm, which for small apartments (especially in 'Khrushchyovkas') is simply unacceptable. The internal organization of an integrated wardrobe-cupboard does not differ from the methods of organizing regular models. The only difference is in the fact that the shelves are attached directly to the wall.

Features of Internal Organization of Corner Construction

It is better to install an integrated wardrobe so that the area is used as efficiently as possible. In corner constructions, compartments for upper garments are usually placed on the sides, and in the center is a sector with shelves. It is also possible to install a corner wardrobe of radius (with a semi-circular front panel). In such cases, the internal layout usually includes two vertical compartments (if the room is small): one for hanging outerwear, the other – for shelves. On top, as if connecting two vertical compartments, there is an attic.

It should be noted that models of the described type on both sides can be equipped with external side shelves. On them, you can store handbags, some small items or use them as stands for decorative vases and other items. But a structure with side shelves is suitable only in a spacious hallway.

Design and Internal Finishing

Here you need to pay attention to the match between the materials of external and internal elements. But this is an ideal variant. Usually, the front panel is made from a more expensive material. In this case, it is important that the tones of the wall panels outside and shelves inside match. If the doors are mirror-like, then the edging or any other external elements should be in tone with the internal organization or any other elements located outside, if the latter is absent. In a small hallway, it is better to install constructions where the internal organization has light tones – this will visually expand the space.

The item, about which we are talking, can be bought in a store, ordered or made by yourself. But in any case, correctly selected internal organization of the wardrobe-cupboard in the hallway will not only make it practical and convenient, but also highlight its elegance, as both the furniture item itself and the entire hallway.
