Design of a 9 Square Meter Bedroom with Photos
A bedroom is a rest zone, freed from everything related to guests, daily hustle, and daytime problems
This is a place where you should detach yourself from everything that can interfere with peaceful sleep and full rest. To achieve this, it is necessary to decorate the room accordingly. In a spacious room, you can give free rein to your imagination, but often in older homes and Khrushchev-era apartments, the bedroom is only 9-10 sq m. This feature does not prevent creating a cozy and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere if you apply some design tricks.
Design tricks for visually enlarging a small bedroom
The space of a 9 sq m bedroom can be visually enlarged by using one design trick or a whole set of visual correction techniques for small spaces. It is also important not to forget that the room should be as functional as possible with minimal furniture and other accessories. Main ideas for decorating a 9 sq m bedroom:
- When choosing furniture and finishing materials, it is recommended to stop on light shades;
- Using mirrors and other reflective surfaces, glossy facades, helps increase space;
- You should avoid bulky furniture, an abundance of accessories, and heavy textiles. Volume curtains are better replaced with sheer or Roman curtains;
- Based on the height of the room's ceiling, you can use a stripe in wall decoration. If the ceiling is high, a horizontal stripe will visually expand the 9 sq m room. If it is low, vertical stripes on the walls should be used to visually raise the ceiling;
- Fitted furniture is functional and takes up little space in the room;
- The main rule for designing a small bedroom is to get rid of everything unnecessary, use proper furniture arrangement, and leave as much empty space as possible;
- Using color accents increases space. These can be bright furniture items, lighting, or finishing elements.
When choosing a style for decorating a 9 sq m bedroom, it is recommended to prefer minimalism, Scandinavian style, hi-tech, Japanese, or eco-style. Styles that require more space, such as loft, empire, baroque, or classical, are not suitable for a 9 sq m room.

Features of bedroom 9 sq m finishing
To create a good atmosphere in a small space, it is recommended to use natural materials such as wood, textiles, and stone. Plastic, vinyl, and any types of film can release harmful substances into the air and accumulate in a small room space. Using natural materials is especially important where people spend most of their time sleeping.

Wall finishing
Wall color decoration largely depends on the chosen style of a 9 sq m room, but it is not necessary to use only white color, any pastel shades will do. Regarding the material used for wall decoration in a 9 sq m bedroom, it is preferable to choose the following:
Recommended
For painting;
Made from natural materials (bamboo, cork, plant fiber, textile);
Liquid wallpaper.
Vinyl;
Felt;
Silk screen printing.
Plaster
Any type, relief pattern or its absence depends on the overall stylistic solution of the room
Decorative Panels
Natural wood panels
Plastic panels;
Particleboard or plywood panels;
Low-grade laminate
Any natural stone in the form of tiles or panels
Gypsum Board
High-quality gypsum board covered with natural finishing material
Low-quality and low-cost gypsum board
In terms of space saving, in a 9 sq m bedroom, wall finishing should be done with wallpaper or plaster, as other types will take up extra centimeters. Doors are better installed as sliding doors to avoid taking up space near the door opening.

How to choose a ceiling for a bedroom
Very often, during apartment renovation, including in Khrushchev-era buildings, a suspended ceiling is made. Using this option is justified if the ceiling surface is too uneven or has other noticeable defects. If its condition is visually evaluated as good, it is not recommended to use synthetic material for ceiling finishing in your rest zone, and moreover, it will make the room 10-15 cm lower. The ideal option for renovating a small bedroom ceiling is to plaster and paint it with water-emulsion paint.

Floor Coverings
Various floor coverings can be used on the floor:
MaterialRecommendedNot RecommendedLaminateOnly high-grade laminate that does not emit harmful substances into the airLow-cost laminate may be unsafe
Cork FlooringAny type
Ceramic TileNot suitable
LinoleumHigh-quality linoleum with high durability
Low-quality linoleum may emit harmful substances and deform
Natural material carpet
Synthetic carpet can cause an allergic reaction and accumulate dust
Of all the above materials, linoleum or laminate is most suitable for a small bedroom, as carpet is mostly hidden under the bed and collects dust, and cork has greater thickness, taking up space in the room.

Ideas for bedroom design in a Khrushchev apartment
Designing a small 9 sq m bedroom in a Khrushchev apartment starts with measurements and creating a furniture layout plan. This is an important step that will help visualize the future design project. The photos below show bedroom design projects of 9 sq m in standard Khrushchev apartments, which can help plan your own space.

Furniture Arrangement
Bedroom arrangement of 9 sq m should be such that it does not visually create a cluttered impression. For this, only functional furniture should be used, and any room features (protrusions, niches) should be rationally utilized. If there is plenty of space under the windowsill, it can be used for storage systems.

How to Choose a Bed
The bed size is chosen proportionally to the room, considering that there should be at least 40 cm of free space on both sides. If the room is square-shaped, a full-size double bed can be installed with free space around it. It can be placed in the center of the room with the headboard facing the wall or near the window, thus giving a fresh design approach to a small 9 sq m bedroom. An example of this is shown in the photo.
However, if the 9 sq m room is narrow and rectangular, the only option will be to place the bed against one of the walls. A wardrobe can be installed opposite the wall. For storing seasonal clothing and other items, the space under the bed with sliding drawers can be used. However, when drawers are present, it is necessary to calculate the bed's placement relative to other furniture so that they can open freely. If there is no space around the bed, a lifting mechanism should be provided for it.

Sofa in a Small Bedroom
To free up as much space as possible, a pull-out sofa can be used as a sleeping place. This option is suitable for those who like to host guests or for people whose bedroom is combined with a work office. During the day, the sofa frees up space, and at night it transforms into a full-size bed.

Closet in a 9 Square Meter Room
Narrow wardrobes with glossy facades will be unobtrusive in a small space. The storage system for clothing can have sliding doors or doors that open by touch. If the bedroom is long and narrow, an angular wardrobe should be installed on one of the short walls or made built-in, thus giving the room a square shape.

Modern Stylistic Solution
The stylistic solution for a 9 sq m bedroom design depends on personal tastes and preferences of the owners, their age, and sometimes the overall apartment decoration. The most successful stylistic solutions, as seen in the photos, are minimalism, Scandinavian style, and hi-tech. Minimalism is using only necessary furniture with no excess in the interior. Scandinavian style is about lightness, airiness, and freshness of the interior. Hi-tech suits modern young people.
For those who love comfort, colorfulness, and minimalism, the Japanese style is recommended. Shabby chic and vintage are stylish aged interiors. Eco-style is a popular modern style based on interior decoration using natural materials and shades close to nature, ensuring maximum rest.

Lighting, Curtains, and Interior Decoration Techniques
Lighting plays a big role in perceiving small spaces. An abundance of daylight makes the room look bigger, and if the bedroom window is small and located on the north side, help will come from well-planned lighting. It should be said that using a massive chandelier in the center of the room is not advisable, as it will attract attention and create disharmony in the interior. The light should be soft, diffused, warm or cool, depending on the window's location. Point lighting for different zones of a small room can be arranged.
Since it is important to let in daylight, you should not drape the window with a heavy curtain. It is better to use a light multi-layered sheer or close the window at night with blinds or Roman curtains.
Greenery is the best decoration technique, but in small quantities. For decorating a 9 sq m room, one floor plant is enough. When decorating a bedroom, vibrant accents are needed, which can be achieved using several bright decorative cushions, a throw, or a small mat. If there is nothing of this sort, an original-shaped table lamp will become the center of attention.

Real Project Photos
Small area is not always a punishment that creates problems with the idea of how to decorate a room. It can become a chance for implementing an original design interior idea when the drawbacks of a small 9 sq m bedroom are turned into advantages, giving restful comfort and coziness in it.
