Creating a Kitchen Like in the TV Series 'Friends'

We were inspired by the interior of the apartment where the action of the American sitcom masterpiece 'Friends' unfolded for ten seasons, and together with Mr.Doors experts, we carefully planned how to design Monica's kitchen and selected stylish and functional items for it.

What makes Monica Geller's kitchen so great?

This is an excellent example of rational organization of a small kitchen where it's comfortable to cook food, store dishes, and meet friends. To confirm this, let's look at Monica's kitchen in more detail.

In the apartment that Monica inherited from her grandmother, it's always busy and full of guests, so for convenience, the living room and kitchen form a single space with several functional zones. The designers of the series highlighted the kitchen by framing it with wooden structures with side shelves, on which domestic flowers and interior items are arranged, while the kitchen fronts and shelves were painted blue, harmonizing with the warm berry-colored walls of the living room.

The apartment has complex, non-standard dimensions, but the kitchen is planned as ergonomically as possible, with many open shelves and quick access to kitchen utensils, dishes, and everything necessary: Monica is a cook, so everything should be within reach during food preparation.

Next to the shelves that replace upper cabinets, pans and saucepans hang, slightly further away – bright plates on the wall as decoration. All this makes the space cozy and lived-in, supporting the eclectic countryside style in which Monica's kitchen is designed.

Furniture, Style and Accessories

To emphasize the rich color of the fronts, complement the kitchen with textiles and dishes with trendy tropical motifs. By the way, dishes can also be used not for their intended purpose and hung on the wall with interesting patterns, as Monica did.

For the dining table where friends often gather together, Monica selected several diverse classic chairs, and decorated the seat cushions with decorative pillows. If you prefer a calmer and more refined atmosphere, use neutral white chairs, hang a large chandelier above the table, and add more wooden accessories. This will make the kitchen atmosphere relaxed and endlessly cozy.

Creating a Similar Kitchen

Material Selection

The Shaker kitchen fronts are made of matte enamel in the color 'Muranos7'. Too bright? Consider a calmer alternative – the 'Basalt' color. In addition, matte enamel was used for sides, tops, cabinets, and the suspended module above the refrigerator. For this module, they selected 'Saffron7' decor.

The lower base cabinets are made from laminated panels in the 'Basalt' decor. For the countertop, wear-resistant and very durable HPL laminate in the 'Crafted Beech' decor was used. Countertops made from this material are easy to clean and retain their original appearance for a long time. The finishing touches – EVO1 pull handles and convenient EVO5 slide handles.

Mr.Doors experts carefully planned how the modern version of Monica Geller's kitchen would look and proposed an improved and more convenient design. Just like in the series kitchen, there are many open shelves where favorite dishes and accessories can be placed, easy access to everything needed, and of course, the captivating color of the fronts.

Designers also took care to adapt the kitchen space from the movie to modern real life. Therefore, the gas stove was replaced with a practical cooktop, and the ceramic sink was replaced with a more impact-resistant one made of stainless steel.

Different from the kitchen movie prototype with 'rusty' countertops – this shade was more relevant for the 90s – the countertops of the kitchen and dining table in this project are a lighter, cooler color.

Pay attention to the hardware: in the modern version it looks more expensive and presentable than in the movie, and the slide handles are wider, making the kitchen space even more comfortable.
