Geometry and Light: Quiet Interior in Gothenburg

In this spacious apartment, there seems to be nothing superfluous – only minimalist furniture, strict prints, and muted tones

When a clean "Scandinavian" style is planned for a home filled with natural light, there's a great chance of achieving an overly sterile interior. Designers from the Swedish company Alvhem Mäkleri & Interiör took this into account when decorating a light-filled two-room apartment in Gothenburg and painted the walls in a weightless light gray color.

Besides, this technique allowed them to emphasize the luxurious coffered ceilings in the living room and bedroom, brick walls, and textured wooden floors – in support of the historical house built in 1905.

The 66 square meter apartment features a flawless layout, a spacious hallway, and a well-thought-out storage system including two walk-in closets and a large wardrobe (located in the bedroom) and a balcony terrace for contemplative coffee sessions when it's warm outside.

The living room, bedroom, and kitchen each have two entrances, and each space is clearly visible from the adjacent one. Therefore, there was a need to stylistically unite them with some common decorative motif. This task was solved using monochromatic geometric prints on rugs, cushions in the living room, and wallpapers in the bedroom.

As for furnishing the interior, the simple ergonomic furniture, textured textiles, accessories, and essential details used by Alvhem Mäkleri & Interiör effortlessly reveal typical Nordic features. This is not just a tribute to style: the designers are big fans of Swedish and Danish brands like Hay, Ton, Tine K, Tell me more, Frama – in short, not just IKEA.

This kind of setting might seem ascetic to some, but it's easily fixable. A couple of soft armchairs with linen covers, a fluffy houseplant, and heartwarming little items – all you need for a cozy interior.
