Learn how to properly, beautifully, and conveniently organize a hallway closet

A separate closet is a great opportunity to forget about clutter in the house and get rid of boring and bulky wardrobes. In such a room, you can quickly find the right item and come up with a stylish outfit for any event. To properly decorate a hallway closet on your own, take the designer Eugenia Ermolaeva's tips as a guide.

Eugenia Ermolaeva EXPERT Interior Designer, founder of EEDS DESIGN. 1. Practical Layout

There are the most common layouts for a hallway closet. Namely:

  • Between the bathroom and bedroom: this layout will save a lot of time. After an early morning shower, you can immediately change and go to work or study, and after finishing a difficult day, you will only need to quickly change and relax in the bathroom.
  • Between the living room and entrance: in this case, you can save maximum time. Upon returning home, you can immediately take off your outerwear, put on your favorite home costume, and relax in the living room.
  • Between the bedroom and living room: this layout is suitable for a small apartment or modern studio. This is the optimal option with an open-plan layout.

In a hallway room, wardrobes, shelves, and drawers of the closet are usually placed opposite each other, so it is important to use vertical space rationally. Plan the following zones in advance:

  • for storing outerwear: optimal depth – from 0.5 m (for fur coats 0.6–0.7 m), height – 1.5 m;
  • for everyday clothes: zone depth – 0.5 m, height – 1 m;
  • for shoes: the height of this zone should match the previous one, so you can easily store any items;
  • dressing area: large mirror, table, and soft armchair – your essential minimum.

When choosing wardrobes, prefer closet models to save space. Don't forget about open shelves and glass doors that serve multiple functions:

  • make the room aesthetically pleasing: neatly hung items and arranged closet accessories look as if they were on display in a trendy boutique;
  • visually 'lighten' the room: glass elements and open shelves help eliminate the feeling of bulkiness and visually expand space;
  • motivate for organized clothing storage: when many items from your personal fashion collection are visible, you subconsciously want to keep them in order;
  • save time: now you don't have to waste time searching for the right item. Everything necessary is already in front of you.

Main Light. You can limit yourself to a traditional chandelier (for classic rooms) or choose trendy built-in lighting.

Mirror Lighting. Allows you to objectively assess your appearance after dressing.

Accent Lighting. Elegant and creative lighting options for shelves in wardrobes look great, and they can be done in non-standard shades. Directional spotlights also help liven up the room.

Tip: Prefer modern LED lighting. With them, you don't have to worry about fading textile items.

If the closet is planned as an open layout, natural air exchange will help prevent various problems. In a closed room, try to ensure there are small gaps between the walls. Doors separating the room should also have holes. You can even buy a specialized ventilation system.
