Gypsum partition wall, glass sliding doors, or maybe textile – together with professionals we explain how to effectively zone your space

More and more people are becoming owners of small apartments and prefer studio layouts. The issue of zoning is more relevant than ever. We have gathered the most popular ideas on what to make a partition from, and designers shared their professional tips.

1. Glass Partition

A transparent glass partition is an excellent option for zoning small apartments. Does it separate different functional spaces? Of course! And in addition, it lets in sunlight – which, let's face it, is never too much.

Advice from Karina Shabunевич: "To prevent a glass partition from looking like an aquarium wall, use window grid patterns in its design. I really love this trick because it instantly transforms the interior".

2. Glass Panel Instead of Doors

Sliding doors are what you need to create an isolated bedroom. However, there will be no light in the room at all. The best solution is to use frosted glass panels that move like a closet.

Advice from Igor Lugerin: "Pay more attention to architecture and room layout than decoration. Prefer clear glass without patterns or ornaments. Consider acrylic glass – it's much lighter and stronger than regular glass".

3. Wooden Partition

One of the most affordable options for zoning is a partition from floor to ceiling made of wooden slats. The installation method is simple, and the required materials are available in any hardware store – you can make it yourself.

Advice from Pavel Gerasimov: "The spacing between slats can vary depending on requirements. If you want to let in light, leave more space between the elements. If you prefer a more intimate atmosphere, keep gaps minimal".

4. Built-in Wardrobe

Thin glass and wooden partitions aren't to your taste? Want something more substantial? Then you'll definitely love a gypsum board partition-wardrobe: it not only zones the space but also increases storage capacity.

Advice from Marina Sarkisyan: "The wider the partition, the deeper the wardrobe space and, accordingly, the greater its capacity. If there's little space and you want to place furniture flush against the wall, use only the upper part of the niche for storage – it’s even more convenient".

5. Concrete Partition

In a studio apartment, the question often arises: where to hang the TV? If the room layout allows it, we recommend placing a zoning partition in the center – for example, made of concrete. It performs its task excellently.

Advice from Inna Usubyan: "To prevent a concrete partition from looking too rough, illuminate it with LED strips at the base and under the ceiling. This creates a feeling that the wall floats in the air. You can use color-changing LEDs – they never make the interior boring".

6. Textile

What could be simpler and more affordable than zoning with textile? Using curtains, any niche can be transformed into an isolated room in one smooth motion.

Advice from Maria Dadiani: "Afraid that light-colored textiles will let in too much light and you won’t be able to rest properly? Make a lining from light-blocking fabric for the curtains – either by hand or order it at a tailor shop. Don't forget about hems with velvet brushes or decoration – they look very stylish".
