How Much Sunlight to Install in Grams: 6 Facts About Insolation
If we speak simply, insolation is the illumination of a room and one of the most important factors when designing and arranging rooms. Proper window orientation can help prevent overheating or use solar rays to the maximum. Insolation is considered a special insolation ruler. A layperson cannot calculate it themselves, but this must be done by a builder. According to Russian standards, the minimum insolation in a room where people spend a lot of time is two hours per day. When designing districts and cities, this indicator must be strictly observed, otherwise the house will not pass expert review. However, in private construction it is not regulated. And it strongly affects the healthy indoor environment.
1. Southern Side – For a Child's Room
It is better to place children's rooms on the south-eastern and south-western sides. Note that the south-western direction is the warmest, and in summer the room may overheat. To avoid this, use awnings on windows or special glass. There are also special design solutions when building a house: deep balconies or, for example, long eaves on the building facade.

2. For Utility Rooms – Only North
A storage room, wardrobe, kitchen, bathroom, and hallway are better arranged on the northern side. In practice, it can be seen that solar illumination significantly worsens the microclimate in such rooms.

3. South, East, West – Ideal for Bedroom
A bedroom and living room can be placed according to your preferences – south, east, west, or derivatives of these. It is important that the insolation regime here should be exactly 2 hours, but no more than 3.5 hours. For owls, the south-western direction is suitable, and for nightingales – the south-eastern.

4. Dining Room on the East or West?
If you have a separate dining room, the choice of where to place it depends on whether you want to have breakfast with a view of sunrise or dinner with a view of sunset. Choose accordingly the eastern or western direction. Experience shows that it is more logical and correct to place this room near the kitchen and choose the north-west or north-east direction.

5. Finding the Perfect Spot for an Office
The choice of where to place an office is an interesting and deep task for an interior designer. If the client prefers to work without sunlight, then the north-west or north-east direction will be comfortable for them.
People in creative professions (sculptor, artist, designer) need good lighting, but the southern direction will not suit them – it can overly illuminate objects and distort them. The north-western direction is optimal for using computer equipment. During the day, sunlight does not interfere, it doesn't glare on the screen, and it doesn't create a heat-light effect that strains the eyes.

6. How Much Light Do Allergics Need?
Allergics and people with respiratory problems need up to 3 hours of insolation. Don't forget to consider what kind of sunlight has a healing effect on you: calm eastern or overheated western. In certain illnesses, it is not recommended to overheat rooms, while in others, warmth is very important.
