Balcony Glazing
Cold and Warm Balcony Glazing (Loggia)
Warm balcony glazing is a relatively expensive project. In addition to installing double (or triple) glazing windows, you'll need to invest in insulating the loggia's perimeter, including the ceiling, and plan for heating. Often, owners of apartments in older buildings must reinforce the balcony railing with brickwork, as the weight of glazing units is substantial (1 m² weighs at least 30 kg).
When choosing warm glazing, remember that insulation thickness is typically at least 5 cm, significantly reducing the already small space. However, the result is an extra light, airy room you can use freely.
This balcony can be combined with the adjacent room, increasing the living area. If you plan to do so, ensure you obtain all necessary permits for apartment remodeling to avoid future complications.
Cold balcony glazing is much simpler and more budget-friendly. By glazing your balcony, you’ll not only shield your living space from wind, snow, dust, smog, and noise, but also stop worrying about cigarette butts flying from upper floors. Additionally, you’ll gain enhanced protection against burglary.
Aluminum Profile Balcony Glazing
Using aluminum profiles is a more advanced method compared to traditional wooden frames. Key advantages include:
- Durability and corrosion resistance. Aluminum profiles last up to 80 years with almost no maintenance. The only required task is occasionally wiping moving parts of hardware with machine oil.
- Strength. Experts state aluminum windows are three times stronger than wooden ones, and seven times stronger than PVC windows.
- Ecological safety. Aluminum emits no harmful substances into the air and is completely safe for the human body.
- Lightweight and versatility. Aluminum profiles can be easily installed even on balconies with metal railings, placing minimal load on floor slabs.
- Flexible design. Aluminum allows both hinged and sliding window systems, saving space—ideal for small rooms.
- Cost-effectiveness. Using aluminum profiles is significantly less expensive than installing PVC windows.
- Stylish design. Thin aluminum profiles minimize frame obstruction. The neutral silver finish blends seamlessly with various interior finishes, especially in hi-tech, minimalist, or tech-style designs.
Frameless Balcony Glazing
Frameless balcony glazing originated in Europe in the 1990s. In Finland, for example, nearly all balconies are now glazed this way. The technology is increasingly popular in our country.
Despite appearing fragile, specially tempered glass panels are highly durable. They cannot be broken by thrown stones, and withstand strong wind loads. Even if glass breaks, fragments are cubic and lack sharp edges, minimizing injury risk.
You can choose standard glass, tinted, or mirrored variants. No matter your choice, the result will look not just modern, but truly futuristic. A special transformer system allows opening or closing windows in seconds, while built-in straps securely hold them in place, preventing accidental opening.
Disadvantages include higher cost, lower sound insulation compared to other systems, and incompatibility with standard mosquito nets. Beauty or practicality? The choice is yours.
DIY Balcony Glazing
Be aware: balcony glazing can be done independently only if you have basic construction skills. Otherwise, your efforts may result in unpredictable outcomes, despite time and financial investment.
The easiest way to DIY balcony glazing is using single aluminum window frames ordered from a manufacturer. No need to measure yourself—companies typically send a specialist to assess, and you can get expert advice on whether to replace the railing with brickwork.
If the railing is strong enough, fix a metal angle frame around the balcony perimeter using screws or dowels. Apply adhesive seals at the corners. Use a level and plumb line to align the frame. Fill all gaps with expanding foam and seal with silicone.
Attach the window frames to the frame according to instructions. After installation, adjust latches to align with the strike plate, and secure the external drip edge with a roofing screw and metal washer, sealing joints with silicone.
Now you can enjoy compliments from your family!
