6 Rules of DIY Renovation: Expert Tips

Summer is not only a time for vacations and outdoor relaxation, but also our beloved national sport called 'You can't finish a repair — you can only start it.' Here are several rules to help you complete the task faster, easier, and more efficiently.

1. Do the renovation in summer

Don’t delay! If you’ve decided to take on this project — now is the perfect time. Anything that needs to dry will dry quickly. Heating systems that are off in summer can be safely replaced. And moving paint cans, wallpapers, and stools is far more pleasant in warm weather.

Plan your time so you can finish within two months. Sit down and create a daily schedule. If you feel you’re falling behind, don’t hesitate to ask for help. If you’re hiring workers — great! The cucumbers and tomatoes on the dacha have been waiting for their moment!

I don’t recommend living in a renovated apartment: you might not be able to shower, eat, or use the toilet… and your eyes will start to blur.

2. Hire professionals

If you’re not 100% confident in your plumbing or tiling skills — don’t risk it. The market for these services is full, and finding the right expert is easy. Often, a simple post on social media or a call to parents with a sacred question: 'Anyone available?' works. Also, there are specialized forums where you can find qualified people.

3. Don’t skimp on safety

This rule always applies, on any scale and under any conditions. In most old buildings, electrical wiring, plumbing, and sewage systems have long exceeded their service life.

If you’ve decided to renovate, engineering systems are the only thing that truly deserves your attention. When installing new ones, don’t fear changes — design them to suit your needs. Avoid ending up with five access hatches in the bathroom, each with its own valve.

Soviet architects were talented, but they didn’t understand modern lifestyle needs. So go ahead and install fiber-optic cables inside walls and floors, bringing them close to your workstation. You can safely embed the washing machine’s water hose into the wall near the appliance.

And you can freely install outlets on nearly every wall. After all, wouldn’t you prefer not to end your renovation with a trip to buy power strips?

4. Save on finishing touches

Yes, I believe so. And this is backed by years of experience. Because these are elements you can change often — by mood or season. Even the most stunning wallpapers get old. For those who love frequent changes, consider paintable wallpapers and curtains instead of bulky wardrobes.

But don’t overdo it! There are objective price standards, and some claims are clearly unrealistic. For example, good vinyl wallpapers shouldn’t cost 150 UAH per roll, and ceramic tiles with straight edges (yes, they’re not always like that) shouldn’t be 100 UAH per square meter. You’ll only discover why when something cracks or peels off. The simplest way to choose good value: pick the item in the middle price range.

5. Don’t be afraid to experiment

Who said green wallpapers don’t go with a yellow ceiling and red chairs? If you like it, it’s the perfect match.

Design your interior as you wish, not as someone in a fashion magazine or TV show suggests.

All design styles known today once caused confusion and resistance from traditionalists. Don’t confine yourself to a single style — create your own.

6. Most importantly, enjoy the process

Feel like an artist, a designer, a blacksmith shaping your own happiness. Then settling into your new home will be far more satisfying. If you’re unsure, consult a professional designer. Combine expert advice with your personal vision to create a truly unique and satisfying result. As they say — start a new life on Monday!
