How to Care for Plastic and Wooden Windows

To ensure your windows operate reliably, efficiently, and last for many years, proper maintenance is essential. Gentle care is required for windows made of any material, so annual inspections and preventive measures are necessary for both wooden and plastic windows.

Inspection and maintenance of window surfaces
Wooden windows
Due to weather exposure, the outer surface of window frames may deteriorate, so it should be renewed using varnishes and moisture-resistant paints. If windows face south, inspection should be done annually. Those facing north, east, or west can be checked every 3–4 years.

To prevent mold and rot, use paints for wooden frames that resist moisture and prevent swelling and shrinkage of wood. Acrylic paint works well for exterior frames, while alkyd paint is recommended for interior parts and sills. Alkyd paint is more resistant to mechanical damage.

Wooden window surfaces can be cleaned with plain water and a mild detergent free of ammonia, solvents, or gasoline. Avoid anything that might scratch the surface. In general, wipe with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly with a soft towel to extend the lifespan of wooden surfaces.

Plastic windows
Regular cleaning products or specialized ones help remove dirt and dust. There are products designed for colored and white plastic. Thanks to special ingredients, they remove not only everyday grime but also oil residues from vehicle exhaust and other household pollutants. Importantly, they are safe for human skin and the environment, and have antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

Apply cleaning solution evenly along the profile. After 5 minutes, rinse off with clean water—avoid circular motions. Do not dry with a cloth to prevent static buildup. Never use acids, including vinegar, for cleaning plastic profiles. Also avoid lacquer removers, gasoline, and nitro solvents.

Tip
Use cellulose or cotton cloths that absorb moisture well for cleaning.

How to maintain window hardware
Wooden windows
To protect hardware from wear, lubricate once a year with vaseline or a product suitable for sewing machines.

Plastic windows
Same cleaning products used for wooden frames are suitable for plastic windows. You may also use a specialized spray designed for hardware. Avoid lubricants containing acid or resin.

Tip
If any moving parts (plastic or wooden) become loose, tighten them or contact a professional for replacement.

Maintenance of transparent surfaces
Wooden windows
Window glass can be cleaned with a soapy water solution.

Plastic windows
Window panes can be cleaned with automotive glass cleaners, ammonia solution, or specialized glass cleaning agents.

Maintenance of rubber seals (gaskets)
Wooden windows
Rubber seals are often used in wooden window frames. To keep them flexible and long-lasting, apply talc or a special silicone lubricant twice a year. Avoid using solvents for cleaning. Also, avoid contact with gasoline or kerosene-based liquids.

Plastic windows
Plastic window seals are made from rubber. To prevent cracking and drying, lubricate them once a year with a product containing glycerin or silicone oil.

Tip
If seals are damaged, contact a specialist to replace them.

Maintenance of water drainage profiles
Wooden windows
To prevent wood rot and protect paint finishes, modern windows include a water drainage profile. It protects against direct moisture exposure. Regular cleaning from dirt and snow is essential.

Plastic windows
Also clean the drainage holes near the frame joint using a vacuum. Use a thin plastic or wooden stick to clear water drainage holes.

Tip
Pay special attention to ventilation. This helps remove moisture vapor and maintain proper indoor humidity to prevent condensation.

Remove mosquito nets from windows in winter. Wash them with plain water.
