Fingerprints are clearly visible on the smooth door of a kitchen cabinet. On textured ones, they may get lost among the vertical stripes, especially if the surface is matte. When light hits from the side, the surface appears more three-dimensional and interesting. That’s why textured fronts, wavy tiles, and furniture with pronounced relief draw attention even in the most subdued interiors.

But after installation, an interesting characteristic becomes apparent: the usual method of wiping with a cloth is sometimes not enough. And it’s not just about dust.

Why Identical Stripes Behave Differently

At first glance, a textured surface seems simple: it consists of alternating protrusions and depressions. But the depth, width, and direction of these grooves matter. For example, wide, shallow waves are usually easier to wipe with a cloth. In contrast, narrow, deep grooves may be out of reach for a cloth, so a soft brush will be needed for cleaning.

The direction of the terrain also plays a role.

On horizontal surfaces, dust can settle more noticeably. Vertical grooves don’t create similar platforms, but that doesn’t mean they stay clean all the time. Small contaminants can accumulate in the recesses, especially if the surface is rough.

What to check before purchasing: wipe the sample with a soft, dry cloth. Can you reach the bottom of the grooves, or does the cloth only touch the protruding parts?

This simple test will help you gauge how easy it will be to clean a large surface.

Conditions near the sofa and near the stove are completely different

The same ribbed surface may work well for a side table in the living room but require much more attention in the kitchen.

Near the sofa, the main type of contamination is ordinary household dust. If the surface is smooth and covered, it can often be cleaned with a dry soft brush or cloth.

In the kitchen, the situation is different.

During cooking, tiny droplets of fat enter the air. They settle on surfaces, and then dust sticks to them. As a result, contamination forms in the grooves, which is harder to remove with a dry cloth. This is especially noticeable on surfaces near the stove. Therefore, a ribbed cabinet door in the dining area and the same type of door near the stove may require different maintenance.

Practical tip: if you want to use textured surfaces in the kitchen, you don’t have to make all the cabinets textured. You can keep the surfaces that get dirtier during cooking smooth, and place the textured ones on high cabinets or in areas that are less frequently used.

Wood, MDF, and tile require different care

Although the surfaces may look very similar, the cleaning method depends primarily on the material and protective coating.

  • Textured wood or veneer. It is important to avoid prolonged contact with water here. Moisture can seep through damaged coatings and joints, so the surface should be dried thoroughly after cleaning with a damp cloth.
  • Painted MDF. It is easier to clean if the coating is intact and designed for wet cleaning. However, harsh brushes and abrasive cleaners can leave scratches, especially on matte finishes.
  • Surfaces with decorative laminate. Resistance varies depending on the specific surface. Some manufacturers allow a soft brush for cleaning deep textures, but recommend avoiding abrasive sponges and not pouring water on the joints.
  • Textured ceramic tiles. They generally tolerate water contact better than furniture surfaces. But soap, grease, and cleaning residue can accumulate in the grooves.

Therefore, there is no universal solution for all textured surfaces. Before purchasing, it’s advisable to check the manufacturer’s recommendations, especially if the finish will be located near the sink or stove.

Why Textured Tiles in the Bathroom Require Special Attention

In the bathroom, texture stands out particularly sharply. Light reflects off the protrusions, giving a solid-colored wall a sense of depth. But near the shower, another issue arises: water droplets and soap buildup.

On textured surfaces, they can remain in the grooves. If the water is hard, light mineral deposits appear after drying. Removing them from textured tiles can be more difficult than from smooth ones.

When choosing, consider not only the pattern but also the type of glaze, the depth of the texture, and the number of joints. If the tiles are small in size, cleaning the texture requires additional care for the grout. It is especially important here not to use lime scale removers randomly. Acidic substances are not suitable for all types of glaze, natural stone, and grout.

What to check: find out which products the tile manufacturer permits and whether the surface can be cleaned with a soft brush. For showers, it is better to choose a finish from which dirt can be effectively removed without excessive friction.

How to Determine in Store Whether Cleaning Will Be a Problem

A pretty sample isn’t enough. It’s useful to imagine how this texture will look not on a small display but over several meters of kitchen surfaces.

Before ordering, check four things:

  • Depth of the relief. The narrower and deeper the grooves, the harder it is to reach the bottom with a regular cloth.
  • Surface finish. Find out if wet cleaning is allowed and what cleaning agents can be used.
  • Installation location. Near the stove, sink, and shower, the surface will encounter different types of dirt compared to the living room.
  • Accessibility of cleaning. Consider whether it’s possible to clean the grooves with a soft brush, especially if the surfaces are high or the texture is very fine.
  • If the seller provides a separate sample for testing, you can check the cleaning method approved by the manufacturer and see if any residue remains after drying.

How to Clean Textured Surfaces Properly

    • It’s best to start by removing dry dust. A soft cloth, brush, or scrubber suitable for the specific coating can be used for this purpose.
    • If grease appears in the grooves, use a suitable mild cleaning agent according to the manufacturer’s instructions. After cleaning, remove any remaining residue with a slightly damp cloth and wipe the surface dry.
    • Do not try to clean the grooves with a hard toothbrush, metal sponge, or abrasive powder. Even a surface that appears durable can be scratched.

It’s even better not to wait until dirt accumulates. Fresh spills are usually easier to remove than old grease mixed with dust.

Ribbed surfaces and textured tiles can indeed make an interior stand out without bright colors or complex decorations. But when choosing, it’s important to consider more than just how the surface reflects light.

The most practical option is a texture that is easily accessible during cleaning. This way, the unusual finish remains a pleasant detail of the interior rather than a reason to spend extra time cleaning.
