Guard House by COA Arquitectura: Compact Living with Dignity

Minimalist Design for Maximum Comfort
Guard house, designed by COA Arquitectura, redefines the possibilities of compact living. Built for a security guard and his family, this 926 square foot home puts dignity, comfort, and efficiency first while using the simplest construction methods available in Jalisco.
Despite its modest size, the house employs thoughtful architectural solutions, natural lighting, and a central courtyard that serves as the social heart of the home.
Monolithic Exterior, Cozy Interior
Externally, the house looks like a closed monolithic box, clad in visible colored concrete blocks. But behind this restrained facade lies an unexpected oasis: a private inner courtyard, which fills living and dining rooms with light and fresh air. This contrast between a closed facade and an open interior enhances both privacy and intimacy.
The entrance is marked by a low wall, steel fence, and projecting concrete canopy, creating a clear division between the public street and private sanctuary.
Creating Space Through Structure
The construction system — jalcreto walls, concrete slabs and smooth-finished floors — provides both speed and economic efficiency. A steel beam crossing the staircase opening creates an elegant two-level spatial element, enhancing the sense of movement between floors.
On the second level, spruce wooden partitions add warmth and texture, softening concrete surfaces and creating a cozy feeling upon entering the bedrooms.
Functional and Human-Centered Layout
The floor plan combines simplicity with adaptability. On the first level, living room, dining area and kitchen connect to a terrace, providing natural ventilation and social cohesion. The laundry terrace, discreetly placed and partially sheltered by an extended canopy, adds functionality without compromising architectural integrity.
The upper level includes two bedrooms and a bathroom, each receiving light, air, and carefully chosen proportions that elevate compact living to the level of dignity.
A Model of Economical Architecture
The guard house is more than just housing. It's a prototype for dignified, compact living in Mexico. Using modularity, texture and honest material use, COA Arquitectura created a home that proves high spatial quality doesn't require excess.
Through the interaction of concrete, pine and steel, along with a subtle integration of outdoor space, the guard house achieves its goal: it becomes a compact, efficient and comfortable home for a family with respect for architectural dignity.
