Tips for Creating the Best Home Theater
Want to watch movies at home? Then it's time to plan the decoration of your home theater. Unlike a room with a TV, a home theater is a space designed exclusively for movies and series, created with special lighting, sound, and visual systems.
In other words, the goal is to create a mini-cinema inside your room.
Home Theater Decoration Tips: How to Make It Work
Sound Distribution
What differentiates a home theater from a regular room with a TV is the set of speakers used in the space.
They are responsible for distributing sound coming from the TV, very similarly to what happens in a cinema.
Most home theaters have six speakers: two on the sides, two on the back, a center speaker, and a subwoofer.
Side speakers should be installed high, touching the ceiling and diagonally opposite from the TV. Usually, they are placed behind the sofa.
Side speakers, as their name suggests, are located on either side of the screen and face the viewer. They can be mounted on a wall or simply placed above a sideboard.
The center speaker should be located under the TV, and the subwoofer on the floor next to the screen.
Pay Attention to Room Acoustics
With all this sound equipment, it's important to consider soundproofing.
For that reason, prefer materials with sound-insulating properties. One tip is to use wooden panels on the walls and gypsum board, which can even be used on ceilings.
Plan Color Usage
Neutral and dark colors are preferred for a home theater, as they recreate the concept of a home cinema.
In this sense, colors like black, gray, dark blue, brown, and dark green are among the favorites.
These colors also help make the room darker, like in movies.
Space Layout
It's also important to plan the placement of furniture and equipment inside your home theater.
The sofa should always face the screen, preferably placed opposite a window or door.
Keep the central area free to ensure passage and comfort. Remember that in a dark theater, someone might trip over furniture or objects.
Highlighting the Screen
Besides sound, it's important not to overlook the importance of a screen or TV for a home theater. You can choose a regular TV or a projector if you want something bigger and more like an actual cinema. Always consider the screen proportions in space and distance from the sofa.
To find the ideal screen size, multiply the distance between the sofa and TV by 21.
For example, assume that your sofa is three meters from the TV. Multiply 3 by 21. The result, 63, indicates that the maximum TV size should be 60 inches, closest to the result.
Eliminate Cables
Nothing ruins home theater decor more than a pile of cables in the room. Besides being unattractive, it's dangerous since loose cables can cause accidents.
Therefore, find a way to hide them all. You can do this using panels or even cable channels. Metal 'channel' pipes are also a good option, especially if you want an industrial style.
Beautiful and Comfortable Sofa
Another essential element of home theater decor is the sofa, since that's where you and your family will watch series or movies.
Models with extendable and reclining mechanisms are perfect for such a space as they offer maximum comfort. Another advantage of these models is that after the session, you can fold them up and free up the central part of the room.
Pay Attention to Curtains
Cinema doesn't go well with brightness. During movie viewing, it's best to have a darker environment. So invest in thick curtain fabrics, even blackout ones, in dark colors. The same applies to blinds.
Support Furniture
Side tables, sideboards, niches and shelves help make the home theater more beautiful, organized, and functional.
Invest in these details to know where to place the popcorn box or a drink cup, for example. A sideboard helps organize home theater equipment like speakers.
