In the heart of Bangalore, along the bustling Old Madras Road, a transformative architectural concept has emerged: Timber Edge by Crest Architects. Completed in 2024, this 7,200 sq ft house demonstrates how a creative approach can transform constrained urban spaces into serene and functional homes—balanced in aesthetics, Vastu principles, and ecological sensitivity.

Facade Defined by Wood and Geometry

Working within the existing structural grid, architects from Crest Architects refrained from major structural changes. Instead, they introduced bold spatial solutions that redefine the building's character.

The weak panels on the east facade were expanded into sculptural balconies clad in warm wood. These wooden projecting elements serve as shading devices and transition zones, softening the rigid concrete mass. The sloped basement balcony in the northeast corner—created according to Vastu principles—strengthens the facade with intention and elegance. This clear interplay between material and form gives the project its name: Timber Edge.

Layered Interiors with a Personal Experience

Inside, Timber Edge unfolds as an exquisite symphony of light, volume, and thoughtfully designed details. The east double space allows natural light to penetrate deep into the house. To address structural discrepancies—such as misaligned columns—designers employed elegant visual solutions: a marble and tinted glass partition that also serves as a TV wall and a dividing zone between formal and informal guest spaces.

Between the dining area and lounge lies a curved lacquered glass panel, combining mirror and sink—a fusion of aesthetics and functionality. The protruding marble dining table floats effortlessly, enhancing the spatial rhythm.

Stairs as a Sculptural Center

At the heart of the house lies an affirming element: a protruding staircase inspired by origami. Its angled metal steps with wooden inserts create a play of sharp forms and soft textures—adding rhythm and tactility as one climbs through the home.

From the first-floor living room, you can enjoy views of the double space below. Textured marble blinds and carved marble conceal private entrances, while elliptical ceiling funnels enhance vertical perception and visual interest.

Personalized Bedrooms with Green Connections

Each bedroom reflects the owner's individuality while maintaining a consistent material palette. The master and son’s bedroom showcase rich layers of marble, Venetian plaster, textiles, and wood, whereas the daughter’s and guest bedrooms feature a minimalist style, highlighting private green terraces.

Innovative storage solutions include a protruding vanity table in the master bedroom and a suspended cabinet in the son’s walk-in closet—both enhancing the sense of space.

Terrace as a Calm Sanctuary

All of this culminates in the terrace, which adorns the house with tranquility. A yoga platform, shaded by a metal and wooden arch, offers a secluded relaxation area. Here, a minimalist wall feature with a Buddhist figure concludes the narrative—where architecture meets contemplation.
