Kitchen planning usually starts with a sofa, when you browse the internet or brochures. Inspiration for your dream kitchen is usually a photo in a space the size of an industrial hall.

When such a kitchen finds itself in an ordinary house, it shrinks to the size of several cabinets, where the lack of upper cupboards no longer seems like such a big idea: you need somewhere to put these things.

Although aesthetics are, of course, important, functionality is what really matters. If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, discomforts quickly start to accumulate. Work should always be as ergonomic and simple as possible. Safety, and in most cases, a reasonable price also become the most important aspects of appearance.

SPACE IS ALWAYS THE KEY FACTOR

Kitchen planning begins with assessing available space and budget. They largely determine what kind of kitchen is possible.

Kitchen functionality is based on using existing area and placing furniture, plumbing points, and appliances. The type of kitchen to plan for the space depends entirely on the room's dimensions and shape. Island kitchens are currently on many people's wish lists, but they require significantly more space than, for example, an L-shaped kitchen.

When we designed our own kitchen, we had a very clear idea of what kind of kitchen it should be: an island model with high cabinets at the back. Such a type of kitchen takes up a lot of space, which strongly influenced the layout of our home.

LIST THE MAIN FEATURES AND IDEAS

When planning a kitchen, one should consider the architecture of the house in addition to personal preferences. It is more likely that a kitchen will last longer when these two factors harmonize.

Ten years ago, kitchen trends did not include drawers, lack of upper cabinets, and black furniture. The first two items are still a desire for many, while black kitchens have become lighter — gray.

Thinking about kitchen style is also useful to list all the items that are produced and stored in the kitchen. They can be divided into two categories: necessities and desires. Necessities include storage for appliances, dishes, dry ingredients, and cutlery, while desires include a coffee maker and breakfast cabinet.

With the help of a good kitchen designer, it's easy to turn these points into practical solutions so that everything has its place in the finished kitchen.
