Residential Complex Ten-Bumgaard by WE-S architecten
The residential complex Ten-Bumgaard, designed by the architectural firm WE-S architecten in Bruges, Belgium, consists of seven starter houses arranged around a central garden area. The corner plot allows for maximum illumination of the shared space by reducing building height on the northern side. The project includes two autonomous volumes on the southern side with sloped roofs and vertical cuts, creating terraced homes for young residents. Inspiration was drawn from traditional bungalo designs, with a plan and structure incorporating a nuanced brown band on the facade and upper section made of whitewashed brick. The goal of the project is to refresh the typology of small houses in a shared garden setting.

The project provides 7 starter houses arranged around a central inner garden. The site is located on a corner lot in Bruges. The maximum building volume is reduced on the northern side to connect with the neighboring building, thereby maximizing light penetration into the shared garden area (Phase 1).
On the southern side, the building is divided into two autonomous volumes that open to one side — the shared parking area, and on the other — a bicycle parking area and the common garden zone (Phase 2).
Both volumes feature sloped roofs and vertical cuts, forming 7 terraced homes for newlyweds, young couples, and bachelors (Phase 3). The project attempts to update the traditional bungalo typology of small houses grouped around a shared garden in various ways.
The layout and building materials subtly reference traditional bungalo design, using a nuanced brown band on the facade combined with whitewashed brick at the top (Phase 4).
