Summer Cabin in Dalarna by Leo Kvarsebo
Leo Kvarsebo designed a summer cabin in Dalarna – a project that looks simpler than it actually is. With an area of just under 1000 square feet, this modern house is located on an open site surrounded by nature.

The project's tasks are obvious yet complex: cooking outdoors and indoors. A quiet reading nook and a bedroom under the stars. All three tasks are related to balcony windows and then unified under a roof that becomes a terrace in front of the house. The project includes 8 rooms, including two huts, three terraces and ceilings that are 8.5 meters high over a total area of approximately 85 sq m.
The project faces an almost contradictory issue: the site is too simple. Views, sun, sea and cow pasture are located to the south. To the north lies a dense forest. Moreover, the plot is completely flat and lacks trees as it was previously a pasture. Utilizing views is evident, but architecture must not only do this and allow inhabitants to interact with the surrounding environment.
The house resembles a wooden cabin for adults. The ascent to the top is achieved through several levels ensuring views and privacy. From each level, you can see the next one, creating curiosity to continue climbing up. When you reach the top, the view will be breathtaking.
The house is entirely made of wood – inside and out. Inside, the ceilings, walls and floor are covered with plywood from a closed puzzle factory. Doors and windows were found secondhand, furniture was made on-site from plywood. The frame consists of wooden beams forming an A shape from foundation to peak. Roof and walls are made of Swedish pine.
