Do you feel that your small backyard limits your outdoor design ideas? Don't worry, small spaces can create a big impact with the right design choices. It all depends on how you use the space, which elements you choose to integrate, and which ones you exclude from your backyard design.

In this article, we'll explore creative and innovative design ideas that will make your small backyard look like a beautiful oasis.
Use Vertical Gardens to Maximize 'Air Space'
Your plot has limited ground area. But you also have 'air space' above your property. Sometimes the best thing to do is to go up. Vertical gardens allow you to do this, adding beauty and functionality to your backyard space.
To create a vertical garden, you'll need some kind of vertical structure (such as a wall, fence, trellis, planter box, or another tall feature). You'll also need hanging planters and flower pots, potting soil for plants, and plants suitable for your climate, region, and location (relative to sunlight).
Choosing the right spot in your backyard matters. Pick a vertical surface that gets the necessary amount of sunlight for the plants you want to grow. Make sure it's sturdy enough to support the weight of plants and soil, especially when they're wet.
If you use a wall or fence, you might need to install a trellis or another type of support. Alternatively, you can use a vertical garden planter box or organizer that can be hung directly on the wall.
When planting containers with soil, pack the soil firmly. This will provide support for plants and give them a solid start. When watering, do so carefully to avoid washing away the soil. (And since upper sections may dry out faster than lower ones, add a bit more water to the top levels of your vertical garden.)
Hire a Professional Landscape Designer
If you want your backyard to look professional and luxurious, hiring an expert in this field is worth it.
"An experienced landscape designer knows exactly how to elevate your backyard to the next level and incorporate elements unique to your space," explains RTA Outdoor Living. "However, not all landscape designers are the same! It's important to thoroughly vet candidates before hiring."
Look for a landscape designer who is punctual, experienced, reliable, and has satisfied clients in your area. Price transparency is also important. Beware of those who drag you into the planning process without providing a rough estimate.
Make It Comfortable
You need some 'living' space in your backyard to truly enjoy it. This means creating a space (or several spaces) where you can sit comfortably, relax, and/or socialize.
Look for furniture that serves multiple functions. For example, side tables with internal storage or a bench that doubles as a garden tool storage box. Try to include as many interior elements as possible. For example, lights and rugs on pergolas or balconies – a great idea. Aesthetically, mirrors can create the illusion of more space when strategically placed in your backyard. They reflect light and can make your small space appear larger.
If your deck isn't protected from rain, you need to be more strategic in your approach. For lighting, string lights or lanterns can add beautiful light without taking up floor space. They can even make your backyard magical in the evening.
Create a Fire Pit Area
Comfort and beauty go hand in hand. One way to stay comfortable in your backyard year-round while creating a cozy atmosphere is by building a fire pit area. This gives you a natural gathering point in the backyard, along with warmth and a warm glow that makes this place enjoyable to spend time in.
If you don't like building a real wood-burning fire pit area, you can buy a chimney or gas fire pit. They may not produce as much heat, but at least you won't be going to bed with a lingering smell of smoke.
Transform Your Backyard on a Budget
You don't need to spend thousands of dollars to turn your backyard into a place you want to spend time in. With the right plan and several key strategies, even the smallest space can be made cozy and luxurious. Ready? Let's go!
