ShineMaker Residence by CLB Architects — Mountain Cottage in Wyoming
Creative Hotel on the Edge of the Tetons
Located on a 35-acre plot near Wilson, Wyoming, ShineMaker Residence by CLB Architects is a peaceful retreat designed for a California couple seeking nature-based rest to inspire their writing practice. The project consists of a series of tectonic structures carefully placed within the landscape, offering low views of the Greater Tetons, surrounding forests and undulating meadows.
The site includes a 6000 square foot main house, a 1577 square foot guest house, and a 580 square foot writer's studio, each positioned to respect their unique ecological environments. A fourth chapel is planned for the future, emphasizing the multi-layered narrative of architecture and nature.
Architecture Rooted in Landscape
The main house represents a geological remnant, with its rectangular form rooted in the landscape but rising to the sky at angles. The treated sho sugi ban exterior facade enhances its rugged character, cut into deep overhangs, carved entrances and moments of transparency. The sequence of entry guides guests through a low-lying creek where the glass floor reveals water beneath, blurring the boundary between building and site.
Inside, warm Atlantic cedar, smooth plasterwork and panoramic glazing create a dialogue between materials and light. Each opening is strategically positioned to frame prairie landscapes and dramatic Tetons beyond.
Interior: Layers, Comfort, and Craftsmanship
The interior design reflects the clients' love for literature, music and nature. Ochre-green tones are accentuated by cream, pink and burgundy hues, complemented with antiques, collected art, and custom furniture pieces. Handcrafted details such as relief concrete in the fireplace style, custom murals wallpaper and geometric patterns add depth and originality to spaces.
The main house features three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a spacious walk-in closet for the family with Irish wolfhounds, and cozy communal areas connected to outdoor spaces. A sculptural bathtub carved from a single limestone block underscores commitment to craftsmanship and material honesty.
Guest House and Writer's Studio
The guest house, with its carved entrance and mirror color palette, offers a tranquil retreat for visiting family members and friends. The writer's studio is located somewhat separately — a two-level caretaker’s house among young aspen trees. The first floor contains living space, while the second floor is a studio immersing its occupant in solitude and contemplation, framing trees and mountain views.
Modern Interpretation of Mountain Lifestyle
With its sho sugi ban facades, carefully curated interiors, and strong integration with Wyoming's wild nature, ShineMaker Residence is both a family home and a creative sanctuary. It reflects CLB Architects' ability to create architecture that balances rugged modernism with warmth, artistry and deep respect for the natural environment.
