Residential House 35 by Charged Voids

The Residential House 35 project is a home designed for a three-generation family. Its concept features the arrangement of four layers of boxes and an internal courtyard under a canopy. The project was developed by Charged Voids studio, whose previous work has already been in our focus—be sure to check out the Twin Courtyard House and Residence 913 projects.

A concept was developed for designing a house for a multigenerational family — the arrangement of four layers of boxes with a canopy covering the space between them. This space became the central part of the house, connected vertically to each other.

The layout was organized so that the northern side of the plot is used as a water body and internal courtyard, with views to the main public area of the house.

The first level contained the bedroom for elderly family members, a guest room, kitchen and other public areas.

The Puja room was located along the central vertical axis, directly opposite the entrance. The entry was through a double-height wooden partition where the main doors were a combination of several panels allowing regulation of opening size depending on purpose.

The second level contained three bedrooms for two other generations, and the third level — a recreation area and rooms for domestic staff.

The connecting volumes allowed maintaining connections between various generations and gave the interior a sense of grandeur, as the axes in cross-section were free.

The house is designed as a strong response to Chandigarh's extreme climate, with large window openings oriented only to the north side, while southern and western openings are protected by deep overhangs and vertical shading elements. Two terraced gardens on the second and third levels reduce heat flow from the roof.
