Garden in a Bag
"Spring is coming – make way for spring" — with such a motto, dedicated gardeners grab seeds and spades and rush to their gardens.
There, leaning against the spring sun, they plant, hill up, water, grow... feeling like Michurins.
But not everyone has time to escape to the weekend or to the dacha. And for some, there is simply no dacha at all. Today we suggest you set up a garden bed on your balcony or windowsill. It will take little space, but the yield will be more than in regular flower pots.
So, to feel like a real urban gardener, you will need:
- a polyethylene bag.
- a plastic pipe (diameter up to 5 cm, with holes every 5 cm).
- soil (ideally, it should be mixed with compost or fertilizer for better harvest).
- an old basin.
Let's start.
Creating a Garden Bed from a Bag by Yourself
Place the plastic pipe in the center of the bag. Put the bag into the basin and fill it with soil.

Next, pierce holes in the sides of the cylinder. The size and number of holes depend on what plants you are going to grow. Water from the sides of such a bag does not evaporate quickly, so the soil volume stays moist for a long time.
When you start planting, keep in mind that each plant should get enough sunlight.
Therefore, place a couple of cucumbers or tomatoes on top of the bag. Use string or tall wooden stakes (rafters) as support. If you use string, tie it to the ceiling of your balcony so that plant stems can wrap around it.
In the next, second layer, plant lower-growing plants – blueberries, peppers. The bottom part of the bag can be used for planting greens, onions, celery, basil, etc. You can also grow strawberries this way.

Vertical planting is ideal for fast-maturing cucumber and tomato varieties. They are adapted to temperature fluctuations and are not picky.
Caring for such a garden bed is simple – watering and fertilizing are done through the plastic pipe located in the center of the bag.

By the way, a vertical garden bed for green onions can be made from a five-liter plastic bottle – cut off the top and make holes like in the bag. Water and fertilize all layers through the cut-off top.
This garden bed is an alternative to a dacha plot. If you don't have much space in your garden and want to plant more crops, you can set up such a garden bed even on the dacha! You will not only save space, but also surprise your neighbors!
Good harvest!
