Soft Chair Brings More Comfort to Your Space
The story of the soft chair is as interesting as its design.
Created in 1957 by Brazilian architect and designer Sergio Rodrigues, the soft chair remains a symbol of modern design and one of the greatest representatives of Brazilian aesthetics in international furniture.
This is not unimportant!
PinterestBut it used to be different. This chair, with its unusual and very unique character—especially for the time it was created—did not receive recognition from its creator for a long time.
The reason is unclear. But many believe the chair's design was initially unappealing to the eye. At that time, the world was still under the influence of Bauhaus minimalism, meaning furniture with straight lines and clean design prevailed.
However, the soft chair was completely opposite to that. With large and voluminous forms, it was designed with a wooden structure made of pink wood, covered in massive and soft cushions tied together by leather straps. Sergio Rodrigues himself said that his creation was not meant for aesthetic perception but for use.
In other words, the designer created furniture that was meant to serve. The artist aimed to create something that provided comfort above all else. A chair designed for lazy moments of rest and free sitting was born.
PinterestMany may think that the soft chair got its name from its unpretentious form. But no. According to Sergio Rodrigues himself, the soft chair got this name from factory workers who manufactured it.
One day, one of them approached Sergio and said that a dog at the factory was chewing on the legs of the 'soft chair'. And as you can imagine, that name stuck and remained.
Soft Chair in Interior Design
Despite its bulky appearance, the soft chair is a valuable detail that fits perfectly into any decorative concept. The soft chair works well in both bedrooms and living rooms, can be used alone or combined with other soft furniture elements.
On open terraces, the soft chair invites lazy days. Just be careful not to leave it outdoors in direct sunlight or rain, to avoid damaging the materials.
But wherever it is placed, know this: it will stand out. It's hard to erase the strong and noticeable presence of this piece. So, advice: use it with simpler design elements to ensure the chair gets all the attention it deserves.
Now, let's see this beauty in action? We've gathered several projects where the soft chair became the main accent of the interior. Take a look and get inspired:
