The concept of an unusual 190 square meter house built in the city of Erospilo, Cyprus, designed by Varda Studio, emerged from a combination of two types of materials commonly found in this area — concrete pipes and metal sheets. Architects used them to create two separate shells of the dwelling: a metal structure clad in glass and walls constructed from concrete pipes.
The concrete pipe structure is distinctly heavy and grounded, relying on no high-tech solutions. It provides additional protection from the surrounding environment, especially from the sun, but also from unwanted gazes.
The building's composition is organized linearly along the east-west axis. The open-plan living room, including the dining area and kitchen, is located on the eastern side. Three bedrooms and a study are arranged along a gallery-corridor that runs the length of the house. Large sliding glass doors lead to a wooden decked terrace attached to the southern side of the house. Garden islands with small trees and aromatic herbs are integrated into the terrace. From the north, the building is bordered by a water corridor. The presence of water in the house creates a distinctive acoustic atmosphere; light reflections on the water make the interior more vibrant and engaging.
