Rural House in Italy
Studio Gian Marco Cannavicci undertook the renovation of a rural house in the province of Perugia, Italy. The project involved rebuilding and expanding several abandoned rural structures. The main building was constructed in the 1930s and underwent several modifications in the 1950s, while the others date back to the post-war period.
A smaller-volume structure was placed between the preserved 1930s building and the new wing of the house, serving as a connecting element between the two parts; it houses the kitchen.
The walls of the old wing consist of stone masonry, while the facades of the addition are finished with gray plaster, whereas the kitchen volume is clad in corten steel—a material used in various forms throughout the complex, giving it stylistic unity.
The northern facade features a small number of narrow and tall windows, while the southern one opens toward the garden and peaceful rural landscape through a large 6-meter glazed opening, which can be closed when necessary using high wooden louvers.
The distant granary was completely demolished and rebuilt as a modernist structure clad in corten panels, its glazed facade facing the pool, which is tiled in emerald.
The final intervention involved demolishing and renovating a detached building located at the lower part of the site. The horizontal structure with a flat roof is thoughtfully integrated into the surrounding landscape, planted with olive trees. Its facades facing the hill are fully glazed, while the others are built from stone. Large windows are fitted with wooden shutters that harmonize beautifully with the rough masonry.
The interior design combines contemporary designer furniture with vintage items from the 1950s–60s. Lighting is provided by LED lamps with minimal visual impact—except for a few design objects.
