House in a Secret Garden in Singapore
Wallflower Architecture + Design developed a design project for a house with an area of 1010 square meters, taking into account the specifics of the complex L-shaped plot located on an uneven terrain. Architects buried more than a third of the house into the ground. The seemingly first floor is located at one level higher. This allowed achieving a sense of greater privacy from the entrance and creating a plateau terrace to compose the remaining living spaces and gardens.
Visitors are invited to enter through a granite archway leading to a basement lobby. A spiral staircase made of glass and steel leads to the living room. This first floor level - a "plateau" - was planned as a space where the boundary between interior and exterior, between landscape architecture and decorative greenery, dissolves. Trees planted around the perimeter create a living fence protecting the house's territory from prying eyes.
The floor above - a composition of two rectangular blocks made of limestone tuff, resting on thin columns. The blocks are connected by a covered passage floating above the first floor. Ribbon windows cut through the entire facade. Vertical wooden blinds regulate the amount of sunlight entering the house and can also provide greater privacy when needed.
