Casa Correia by Renato Cintra Arquitectos

Located in the historic center of Lagos, next to the city wall, this house enjoys proximity to the river estuary and a beautiful bay. To the southeast, you can hear the sound of waves and feel the sea air. Nearby is the Governor's Castle where Prince Henry the Navigator lived, and Fort Ponta da Bandeira — an example of naval fortification.

Surrounded by history, Casa Correia emerged from the dream of finding a retreat after years of work. The location, central yet accessible but secluded from tourist crowds, became the guiding principle for developing a project that would provide the family with comfort and privacy.

After demolishing the existing empty housing that did not meet modern needs, a single-story house with three levels was built. The first floor is dedicated to the public area, while the upper floors house private bedroom zones. A spacious terrace was also created on the top floor offering a pleasant view of Lagos Bay.

Within the historic center, with certain limitations and between neighboring buildings, a concept was developed that combines owners' requirements, sustainability, and comfort. The main goal was to blend contemporary design with respect for the historical context and harmony with surrounding houses. The aesthetic expression, developed through facade treatments, embodies a proposal with a modest, simple yet modern language that harmonizes with its environment.

As requested by the owners, the rear terrace was preserved, giving the building a secluded and intimate space that recreates traditional courtyards typical of this region.
