Inspiring examples to turn a balcony into a functional living room

A balcony is a potential opportunity to gain an extra room in your apartment, of course, if you coordinate the reconfiguration and properly arrange this small space. A balcony can be used to organize a mini office, bar counter, reading and relaxation area. We show how designers do it.

Office for work and creativity

In this studio, the balcony was transformed into a home office where it's comfortable to work at a computer and play piano. On one side, a desk was placed, and above it there's a storage structure with closed and open shelves. On the opposite side, a piano was placed. A chair on wheels makes it easy to move from one area to another.

For finishing, practical materials were chosen: walls are decorated with decorative plaster and brick, floor is tiled. The tile looks like wood but with planks of different shades — it's more interesting and unifies all the colors used in the interior. For comfortable work during hot weather and cool seasons, an air conditioner was installed; windows were covered with dark blinds.

Continuation of the kitchen with a half-bar table

The developer's layout was slightly modified in this studio by combining the kitchen with the balcony. To do so, the balcony was insulated and the balcony block was completely removed. It wasn't possible to relocate the heating radiator, so it was hidden under the countertop which also serves as a half-bar table. The heating pipe is located behind the mirror facade of the shelf which visually dissolves in space and doesn't look bulky.

The table was complemented with half-bar chairs — this area can be used for work or quick snacks. The end part of the balcony was utilized as a shelf with closed and open shelves. To make it look lighter, it was made in the color of the finish.

Greenhouse with a relaxation area

One of the balconies in this spacious three-bedroom apartment was transformed into a greenhouse with a relaxation area. Access to it is possible from the hallway, and to let more light into the hall, standard doors were replaced with double swing doors.

The balcony walls were painted with washable white paint. For relaxation, a sofa with drawer storage was provided. Above it, a shelf was hung and next to it a coffee table was placed. The main decoration of the space were plants, which were arranged in floor planters and on tall stands.

Bar counter and additional storage space

In a 40 sq.m studio, the kitchen was expanded by using the balcony. It was insulated, warm floors were installed, the window-balcony block was removed and sliding doors were installed, preserving the balcony contour. A bar counter was set up on the balcony to drink coffee and enjoy views of the river.

Shelves-in-frames were installed on both sides of the bar counter up to the ceiling. They hide a coffee machine, as well as medicines, household chemicals and small appliances. The side parts of the shelves were clad with mirrors — they visually expand the space and reflect a beautiful view from the window.

Relaxation area and bar counter

In this large flat, they didn't combine the kitchen with the balcony but made the balcony warm. The floor is tiled with a warm floor, walls are decorated with decorative plaster and wooden strips. Strips were continued on the ceiling to make the space more cozy and intimate.

In one part of the balcony, a large round chair was placed, while in the other area, a small bar counter with a narrow display case was installed. The display case is suspended and lit to visually avoid overloading the space.
