Visiting El Herwin: Classic with Modern Accents
Vintage finds, color play and cozy details
Today we'll visit blogger El Herwin, whose 1930s home combines classic elements with modern accents. This historic mansion with its rich history, beautiful bay windows and spacious hall with original panels has become a true family nest for El, her husband and their three sons.

From Neglect to Coziness
When the family bought this partially ruined house two years ago, many were surprised by their decision. "It was in terrible condition and had been abandoned for years, but it had good potential," El explains. Five months of renovation from scratch were needed to breathe new life into it.
Color Play
El paid special attention to the color scheme of the interior. In the north-facing living room, she used a rich sage green shade called Pigeon from Farrow and Ball. "Since the house is old, darker colors work well in living spaces, so we chose a classic look with sage green walls and dark furniture," explains the homeowner.
For the south-facing kitchen, El selected a lighter palette that creates a feeling of spaciousness and freshness. "My tip for everyone who wants to experiment with color is just to go for it! But remember how colors interact and which tones complement each other."

Family Heritage
The home's interior is filled with items that tell a story. El admits her passion for antiques and rare finds goes back to childhood—her grandmother was a collector of antique furniture and art. "Her house was like a treasure chamber, full of family relics and large oil paintings," El recalls.
One of her favorite items in the house is a small vintage table from the living room that once belonged to her grandmother. "I love furniture that can tell a story!"

Combining Old and New
El skillfully mixes new purchases with vintage finds. "Most of my large furniture pieces are from The Cotswold Company because they blend perfectly with vintage items." For finding unique things, El recommends Musée Home, Reclectic Vintage Interiors and Vintage Curator Interiors.
The blogger doesn't hide her love for repurposing old items—recently she transformed an old school cabinet into an elegant kitchen buffet. "My husband added curtains on top, lined the back panel with panels and replaced the handles. After painting it, it looked completely different and fit perfectly into our interior!"
Balance and Comfort
With three boys at home, El admits every space must be practical and cozy. "But that doesn't mean it can't also be interesting and beautiful!" The children's rooms and play area have a more modern, playful look, though there are vintage elements—old metal chairs and retro Disney posters.
"When people come to our home, I want them to see our personalities reflected in the interior; I want them to feel a piece of us in every room," El says.

Details Create Atmosphere
El is a candle lover, "even in summer!" and fresh flowers at home. Inspired by memories of her grandmother's house, she decorates her home with antique oil paintings, botanical engravings, portraits and landscapes. Her kitchenware is boldly displayed—copper pots, vintage ceramic jars and cutting boards add texture and interest.

El Herwin's interior is a perfect example of how to combine classic with modern elements, creating a truly cozy and distinctive home with history. Which details inspired you the most? Share in the comments!
