How smart design can transform a tiny bathroom

Khrushchyovkas, becoming a symbol of mass housing construction in the USSR during the 1960s, are known for their compact size. This particularly applies to bathrooms, whose area often does not exceed 2-3 square meters. Nevertheless, even in such cramped conditions, it is possible to create a comfortable and functional space. Today we will look at a real example of renovating a bathroom in a Khrushchyovka located in the Moscow district of Aeroport.

Main points from the article:

  • The bathroom was expanded by relocating a wall;
  • A full-size bathtub was installed instead of a sitting one;
  • Space for a washing machine appeared;
  • Modern finishing materials were used;
  • The old towel radiator was replaced with an electric one.

Before renovation: a typical bathroom in a Khrushchyovka

Before the renovation, the bathroom in Timofey's apartment represented a classic example of a bathroom in a Khrushchyovka:

  • Extremely limited space where only essential plumbing fixtures could fit;
  • A sitting bathtub that does not allow full relaxation;
  • No space for a washing machine;
  • Outdated plumbing and finishing.

"In the original design, it was impossible to turn around," Timofey recalls. "It was impossible to place a washing machine here, and one could only have a toilet, sink, and a small bathtub."

After renovation: functionality and comfort

After the renovation, the bathroom transformed beyond recognition:

  • Space expansion:
    "There was originally a wall here, and we expanded the bathroom by exactly this width," explains Timofey. This allowed a significant increase in usable area.
  • Modern finishing:
    "The walls and floor here are finished with 60x60 ceramic granite," says the apartment owner. Large-format tiles visually expand the space.
  • Thoughtful lighting:
    "The ceiling is also a white matte suspended one with spotlights," notes Timofey. Properly chosen lighting makes the room visually larger and cozier.
  • Functional solutions:
    "A round mirror with backlighting hangs on the wall," says Timofey. "This is very important, especially when the backlighting is circular, as it creates a much softer light and makes hygiene procedures much easier and more convenient."
  • Smart storage:
    "Under the sink are boxes where all personal hygiene items are stored. On the washing machine is a box for laundry pods, a small tray with cotton swabs, sticks, and perfumes," shares details from Timofey.

Innovative solutions

One of the interesting solutions was replacing the old towel radiator with an electric one.

"It's much more convenient because, first of all, you can place it in any point of your bathroom, it is controlled by temperature, and, of course, it is safe in the sense that you won't flood your neighbors," explains Timofey.

Result: spacious and functional

As a result, the tiny bathroom turned into a spacious and functional bathroom room.

"Now there's enough space here for two people, definitely," Timofey proudly notes.

In the renovated bathroom, there is room for everything needed:

  • A full-size bathtub;
  • A toilet;
  • A sink with a cabinet;
  • A washing machine;
  • A towel radiator;
  • Storage systems.

Conclusion: anything is possible

The example of Timofey shows that even in a typical Khrushchyovka, it is possible to create a comfortable and modern bathroom. Key points for successful renovation:

  • Do not be afraid to relocate partitions if possible;
  • Use modern finishing materials;
  • Plan the storage system;
  • Pay attention to lighting;
  • Consider modern technological solutions.

Bathroom renovation in a Khrushchyovka can be a complex task, but the result is worth the effort. As Timofey's experience shows, even the smallest space can be transformed into a cozy and functional room if approached with intelligence and creativity.
