Embracing and creating the cozy nest of your dreams

Aida Beglova built a small house from a prefab herself: the result was impressive. If you've been thinking about renovating your dacha or are planning construction, there are several hacks that will come in handy. We tell you how to decorate a stylish, comfortable, and most importantly — cheap interior.

Choose Scandi Style

The most budget-friendly and accessible option in terms of purchasing items and decor is the Scandinavian style and its variations. You don't need to be a designer to replicate Scandi yourself. Moreover, this style works well with a dacha theme: use of natural textures, thoughtful organization, an abundance of plants and decor. Also, most stores (especially mass-market) sell products mainly in this style.

Finishing

Inside a dacha house, boards or log imitation are often used because they install quickly and require little maintenance. However, remember that if the boards aren't properly dried before installation, they may crack during drying.

Painting the Boards

The most important thing is to seal the wood pores. If left in their original state, they will yellow over time. If you didn't plan to live in a yellow room, then you'll be disappointed: yellow wood dims the space. For this reason, it's better to use oil or wood paint.

Wood can be completely covered so that the natural structure of the boards or logs is not visible. Another solution is to slightly toner it to get rid of yellowing. Both options are good: the key is understanding what result you want — a solid layer or a soft effect. For painting, white and trendy coffee with milk tones are often preferred.

Boards + Wallpaper

Another favorite trick of mine is combining boards and wallpaper. You can decorate one wall with wallpaper, and the other three walls with boards. Or choose another option: divide the wall in half — bottom part is boards, top part wallpaper.

Work with Color

You can boldly experiment with color palettes. If you have old boards, use dense covering paint and paint the wall behind the sofa in one color, and others in another. I love using colors to highlight zones — for example, behind the headboard or the kitchen zone.

Don't Be Afraid to Complicate

Just like outside the house, you can complicate the interior inside with window and door trims as well as baseboards if you paint them in a different shade from the walls. Our favorite white color is useful here. The most common approach (especially if the boards are slightly toned): trims and baseboards should be painted with dense covering paint.

Open Storage

To create a cozy atmosphere in a country house, add open shelves on brackets. You can put various small items there. Especially relevant in the kitchen area: jars for tea, coffee, spices — you can display them instead of hiding them. It's pleasing to the eye and everything is within reach.

Kitchen Decoration

The kitchen apron can be made as a white cabin from tiles or ready-made plastic panels that look like tiles. If you want to keep the wood or brick appearance, cover it with a glass apron — custom-made with cutouts for fasteners and outlets.

It's luxurious if there is a retro refrigerator on the kitchen. A popular brand is Smeg, but there are also analogs. For example, our domestic craftsmen restore old refrigerators and can even paint them in the desired color. You give your refrigerator a second life and save a considerable amount of money.

It's beautiful and convenient to install a bench or mini sofa on the kitchen. You can buy a ready-made bench from a building or furniture store and paint it to match your interior. Don't forget about cushion seats for comfort.

And what kitchen is without a buffet with beautiful dishes? If space is limited, the buffet can be placed in the hallway or living room. Preferably with a closed bottom and glass top.

Hack: if you have an open bookshelf or buffet, you can transform it by gluing wallpaper to the back panel. Then even half-empty shelves will look full.

Entrance Area

To transform the entrance area of a dacha house, you can make a bench with open hangers and a top shelf. I haven't seen ready-made products, so you can freely let your imagination run wild and build it from lumber and furniture panels. After painting, add decor such as baskets and cushions.

Another favorite trick is using venetian blind facade doors for a wardrobe. Doors are sold ready-made, e.g., at Leroy Merlin. With these doors you can build a custom-built wardrobe. Furniture is best purchased in natural wood, oak or bleached oak colors. Also consider white and black models.
