All done with their own hands

This small cottage is located on Cape Cod, an American peninsula. Young couple Julie and Josh inherited it along with their main house. Previously, it was used for storing garden tools, but in the 70s, Julie's mother converted it into a studio.

Now, this formerly empty cottage has been given a new life. New York architect Malachi Connelly volunteered to help the couple transform this old barn into a cozy living space.

First, they decided to replace the roof, which was about to collapse. The structure was clad with siding, and doors and windows were replaced. They left the small window arch untouched as it gives the building a unique look.

Inside, they replaced the rotted plywood floor, reinforced the walls and installed sound insulation.

Architect Malachi Connelly painted it white with blue and yellow accents. The same color scheme was applied to the interior walls, creating a Mediterranean-style interior.

The majority of the space was converted into a living room. Guests have access to the kitchen and relaxation area in the main house.

A bathroom was created on the first floor, and a summer shower was installed outdoors instead of a bathtub.

Stairs leading to the second floor remain as they were years ago, sturdy and reliable. The bedroom is located upstairs with a skylight for natural light.
