Household Items Ruin Interior Design: 7 Common Mistakes Made by Every Second Person

Such familiar items for many, like refrigerator magnets or an ironing board, can significantly spoil the appearance of a room. Perhaps you also make these mistakes without even noticing.

Architect Evgenia Matveyenko from Flatsdesign bureau shared with us seven of the most common mistakes in interior design and advised how to avoid them.

1. Refrigerator Magnets

Cute magnets from different corners of the world that we love to put on the fridge are completely out of place when implementing an art concept for the space.

It's better to provide a separate board or paint the wall with "Magnetic Board" color for later attachment of magnets.

2. Souvenirs

Unlike fridge magnets, souvenirs purchased in other countries and cities fill all free shelves in the house, not just the fridge. To prevent this, plan their arrangement.

For example, souvenirs of the same size from one tourist region can be arranged in a specific place. As a result, you get a complete collection that will definitely become the highlight of the room.

3. Dishwashing Agents

Cleaning products in the bathroom and kitchen should always be within reach, so hiding them away is not an option.

However, you can pour dishwashing agents into attractive dispensers or implement a special storage system in the sink.

4. Ironing Board

An ironing board is often left standing in the middle of a room and used to pile everyday clothes and other items.

It's best to place it in a wardrobe or laundry room. Many homeowners also ask designers to plan a special compartment matching the board size for easy access.

5. Shoes in the Entrance Hall

Due to insufficient storage space for footwear in the wardrobe, shoes are often nowhere to be placed. As a result, winter boots and summer sandals accumulate chaotically in the passage or one single cabinet.

To spread shoes throughout the entrance hall, it's necessary to provide shoe racks, benches, or poufs with drawers.

6. Sports Equipment

Besides their intended use, treadmills are often used for storing clothes and other accessories (even though storage solutions like hangers and wardrobes exist).

Any fitness equipment should at least be separated by a screen or placed in a separate room (e.g., on the balcony).

7. Bed Linens

A common mistake in interior design: the bedroom is done in one color scheme, but bedding items are in another.

This problem can be easily solved by choosing textiles of the same tone as the bedroom. Bright accents can be added with simple decorative pillows on top of a monochromatic duvet cover.
