Scandinavian Style Without IKEA — It's Really Possible

Two-bedroom apartments can also feel cramped, but they can be made spacious and stylish with a unique touch. This couple from Kazakhstan spent only two months on the renovation, staying within their limited budget. In the end, they created a cozy 'Scandinavian' apartment with retro elements.

We tell you how it all happened.

They decided not to do a major reconfiguration but removed the corridor, which added 4 square meters to the bathroom, kitchen, and living room areas. Doorways were transformed into walk-through passages, and a wardrobe was organized in the living room.

They also left the brick wall as is and bought ceramic switches with external wiring.

Marina decorated the kitchen from top to bottom. The opening with an aesthetic rust was left as is and reinforced with a steel beam, while the windowsill was tiled and made to look more 'expensive'. The kitchen cabinet was custom-made, and the handles were bought in India seven years ago.

Since IKEA is not available in Kazakhstan, they had to order interior items from other places. For example, the sliding door system was bought in the USA, and the fabric for the sofa cover — in China. The doors, tables on the kitchen, living room, and bathroom were all designed based on custom sketches.

A bright retro accent was a turquoise sideboard in the living room, a mirror from an old cabinet in the bedroom, and a restored 1970s chair. These accessories perfectly complemented the Scandinavian interior.
