Valuable insights from professionals

Together with expert Maria Lazić, director of the Maryart design studio, we'll tell you what to pay attention to when arranging a schoolchild's room.

For preschoolers and primary school students, it's most important to choose the right workspace and bed. Children spend a lot of time doing lessons and homework, so it's very important for them to get quality rest and sleep at night.

1. Work Desk

There is a huge variety of writing desks for schoolchildren in stores. Among them, you can highlight monolithic structures and those with adjustable height and tilt angle of the desktop relative to the seated child. The second option is very convenient, as the desk supports can be adjusted to a specific level depending on the child's height.

Also, it is a very cost-effective solution because it can be used by several children at once. For example, if there are two children of different ages in the family, it's easy to adjust the desk for each one.

For a preschooler, any regular writing desk and chair that fit their height will be suitable. Here they can read, play, draw, and do their homework.

You can add additional shelves, racks, or drawers to the writing desk. Also, a hook for a backpack can be attached to the side of the desk and a footrest can be organized.

2. Lighting

An important point in organizing a workspace for a schoolchild is lighting. The work desk should be placed so that daylight from the window falls on the desktop from the left if the child is right-handed, and from the right if they are left-handed.

The ideal solution would be to place the work desk along the window. You just need to add some artificial lighting in the form of a couple of lamps to create comfortable conditions in the evening.

3. Chair

Don't forget about the importance of a chair. Choose a model with adjustable height and an anatomical backrest that supports the natural curvature of the spine. We do not recommend chairs with armrests, as they may harm the child's posture.

4. Bed

For your child's bed, choose a safe material for the frame—this can be wood, MDF, veneer, or metal. Also, pay attention to the quality of the mattress: it, like an orthopedic pillow, directly affects the quality of sleep.

Also, for comfortable falling asleep, we recommend hanging dense textile with a blackout effect on the windows. There are also smart alarms that simulate sunrise warm light in the morning. These gadgets can easily help children adjust from rest to study.

5. Wardrobe

When a child goes to school, their wardrobe increases significantly. Not only does the school uniform grow, but also the sports uniform, equipment, and several pairs of shoes. For these purposes, you need a convenient and spacious wardrobe, the place for which should be planned in advance in the child's room. Complete the setup with side or hanging shelves, bookcases for books and various small items.
