DIY Idea: Affordable Scandinavian Wardrobe Made by Hand
Complete step-by-step guide to creating a stylish piece for your home or cottage
Recently, we shared about an incredibly cozy Khrushchev-era apartment where Katya, together with her husband, created a unique interior. Almost everything in their apartment was made by hand with love. Today, Katya shared with us a great DIY idea for making a stylish wardrobe by hand.
You will need:
- 50x50 lumber,
- 17 mm furniture board,
- 100x20 planks,
- 16x40 rails,
- 4 mm plywood,
- wood glue,
- brackets,
- screws,
- door hinges (with dampers in our case).

BaseTo make the base, we join 50x50 lumber pieces together. We connect the boards using brackets and glue. You should end up with a structure similar to a stool. Our base was 800x750x500, with a shelf at 450 mm height. To make the shelf, we cut 16x40 lumber and glued it into a pre-finished groove in the 50x50 board.
BodyTo assemble the body, you need to cut furniture boards to your desired size. In our case, we got three boards measuring 1100x500 (side panels and internal partition) and two boards (floor and roof) measuring 500x750. Plus, two small pieces of board for internal shelves (our shelves were 480x350). Assemble the body using screws and wood glue.
Back PanelTo make the back panel, we use plywood, fastening it into a pre-cut groove to match the thickness of the plywood. Once the body is ready, we attach it to the base with screws. This way, the final size of the wardrobe becomes 1930x750x500.
Shelves and DoorsInside the body, we mount shelves. For the hanging bar, we used a 15 mm diameter round rod, which is mounted on two hanger brackets.
Now we cut the planks in half (along the length) to make two identical frames. We join them with brackets and glue. On the inside, we cut a groove using a 45-degree router bit. Then we cut 16x40 rails to the required size and angle. We cut these rails in half along their length, which gives us rails for two identical doors. We glue them into the pre-made groove in the door frames. After the glue dries completely, we hang the doors on hinges.

- 6 meters of lumber cost us 900 rubles,
- We spent 1/3 of a large sheet of plywood for 1400 rubles (around 460 rubles),
- The planks cost 400 rubles,
- Hardware – 600 rubles,
- Glue – 250 rubles.
In total, such a wardrobe costs 7,710 rubles.
