Designers share what to consider when setting up a bedroom for two and offer tips on organizing order with IKEA solutions

Recently, the IKEA Warm Station store featured an interior design of a bedroom planned for the interests of a hypothetical young couple: Margarita and Konstantin. According to the concept, he is a radio financial analyst, and she is a former insurance agent. Margarita is interested in art and runs her own fashion blog. Konstantin enjoys music and always structures everything at home, including the layout of his living space.

Working together with invited designer Anna Mozhario, IKEA designer Sofya Novikova created a design for this bedroom that caters to the different interests of the couple. We asked them to elaborate on how to plan the interior and organize storage in a bedroom that considers the interests of two people.

Considering Interests, Individuality, and Beauty

Color in the Interior

Anna believes that the color of the bedroom should appeal to both people. Feeling comfortable in the space is the most important thing. Whether the walls are light gray or dark blue depends on personal taste. One of the most popular approaches in the designer's interiors is to use medium-toned walls and eye-catching wallpapers behind the headboard. Such an accent is outside of constant field of vision and does not become irritating.

Furniture

If the couple doesn't share a taste in furniture, it's better to choose basic models without eye-catching details. This is what the designer did for her characters, or find a compromise solution.

Lighting

According to Anna, when planning lighting, several scenarios should be considered: main ceiling light, side lights, and camera lighting. For example, a side lamp is ideal for reading before sleep. Simply place a wall sconce near each sleeping area so that you don’t have to sacrifice your hobby or disturb your partner's sleep.

To make it comfortable for both people to watch a movie in the evening or get up in the middle of the night, Anna suggests installing backlighting behind the window cornice on one side. This is the easiest and most practical form of camera lighting.

Individuality in the Interior

Individuality can be expressed through details. In the case of the designer’s characters, Konstantin’s passion for music is reflected in vinyl records placed in frames and hung above the bed headboard.

Margarita’s love for art can be seen in the designer wallpaper with arches and plasterwork on the ceiling. However, it's better not to use too “eye-catching” elements in the bedroom for reflecting interests. These are harder to change than decor.

Functional and Practical Storage Solutions

Storing Men's and Women's Clothing

First and foremost, Sofya recommends decluttering: assess which items you no longer wear and which take up space in your wardrobe. If clothes are stored in the bedroom, it's convenient to separate them into men's and women's clothing so that neither person disturbs the other during packing.

For seasonal items, use special textile boxes such as those in the SCUBB series. To easily identify whose things are inside, use containers of different colors. For example, place men's items in a black box and women's in a white one. Also, label each box with textile markers.

Storing Bed Linen and Clothes

According to the designer, it's convenient to store bed linen close to the bed or in bedside drawers. If there is little free space, a bed with a lifting mechanism can be an excellent solution. It serves as an alternative "wardrobe": under the bed, you can store bulky items like suitcases or seasonal shoes, seasonal blankets, and more.

In any case, it's all individual. Sofya advises thinking first about your habits and where it's most convenient for you to store items. The designer recommends following the principle of “everything within reach.” This way, you can assess whether the storage in the room is logically organized or not.

Storing Small Items Without Visual Noise

Accessories, jewelry, undergarments, and cosmetics are better stored in closed furniture: wardrobe, dresser, vanity table. Also use insert drawers, containers, dividers, and special organizers for specific items.

IKEA has a COMPLEMENT series of products that includes these items. All of them help visually free up open room space from unnecessary details and create a feeling of order.

Beautiful Renovation and Long-Term Order

After a thorough analysis of which space organization suits you best, your belongings will be in order, Sofya is confident. In addition, maintaining such an organization won't require a lot of time.

Regularly review your belongings and get rid of anything unnecessary. Don't forget that the space around you should adapt to your life, not the other way around. Everything can change depending on your needs and priorities.
