6 Materials for Walls in 2020 Trends
Texture, eco-friendliness, and easy maintenance — choose wall finishing based on the most relevant trends in modern design
With each passing year, interior design becomes more demanding — both in terms of material quality and decorative elements. Together with OBI experts, we explored which wall finishes will be relevant in upcoming seasons and determined what materials to choose if you want to create a stylish and modern interior.
Eco-friendly paints
One of the most global trends in modern design is eco-friendliness. It has also affected the lacquer and paint products: paint remains the most popular option for wall finishing. However, it must now be as safe and non-toxic as possible.
Design: Maria Pilypenko and Ekaterina FedorovaThe most trendy are matte paints in complex, saturated colors. Paints that imitate concrete surfaces remain popular as well. They are especially appropriate in loft, Scandinavian, and eclectic interiors.
Design: Julia VeselovaAmong the latest trends are metallic-effect paints: they bring a light sheen into the room. Moreover, surfaces painted with such paint reflect light better and look incredibly stylish.

Decorative Plaster
Another strong trend in modern interiors is texture. It's no surprise that among the most popular finishing materials for walls are decorative plasters.
The more pronounced the texture, the better. The current choice is silk plaster (liquid wallpaper) and plasters imitating vintage finishes.

This material combines the advantages of traditional wallpaper, paint, and Venetian plaster. Among its undeniable benefits are low cost, ability to mask small wall irregularities, improved sound insulation, and resistance to micro-cracks.

Wood Panels
Wall panels made from wood or skillfully imitating its texture are a fashionable solution that adds natural motifs and elements of ecostyle to the interior. These panels are durable and easy to install, capable of hiding minor wall flaws and looking great as accent surfaces.
Another significant advantage is the texture of such finishing. With it, the interior becomes more interesting and gains the necessary volume.
