Preparing a Country House for Winter: 8 Tips
Even if you plan to visit the dacha in winter, the house still needs to be prepared for the winter season. Check the roof, downspouts, and do a cleaning.
Check the Roof
In winter, even a roof in good condition can suffer under the weight of snow — not to mention a damaged one. Inspect the roof for defects — minor damage can be fixed using self-adhesive bitumen-polymer waterproofing tape, painted to match the roof color.

Install Snow Guards
Only after checking the roof, install snow guards on it. This is additional protection against mechanical damage and from falling snow. But don't forget that snow puts significant load on the roof, so it's essential to clear the roof in winter.
Check the Attic and Basement
Look for leaks or mold. If there are leaks, the roof is damaged and you need to go back to the first point. There should also be no condensation or mold here.
The same applies to the basement. Musty smell and water droplets on walls are signs of high humidity. In this case, the basement needs to be ventilated and all shelves and racks should be dried in the sun. Also, preserve all canned goods in another location.

Clean the Downspouts
Downspouts collect a lot of autumn leaves and pine needles. You can clean them with a brush made of synthetic or plastic bristles. Do not use chemical agents or tools with sharp edges — they can damage the gutter coating.
On dry weather, you can use a special air blower that can both suck in air and create a powerful airflow.

Oil Windows and Doors
Oil all hinges, locks, and moving parts with special lubricant. Check window seals; they may need replacement. Also, tape windows using self-adhesive tape.

Do a Wet Cleaning
Wash floors, wipe dust off surfaces, wash all textiles, dry them and store in wardrobes. The same applies to dishes.
Move Garden Furniture and Accessories Off the Yard
Bring all items into the house or shed. You can cover them with thick plastic or tarp, but remember that not all materials can withstand the cold.

Make Sure Nothing Is Forgotten
It's important to shut off water, electricity, and gas, especially if you won't be going to the dacha until spring. If you plan to return in winter, prepare the heating system in advance.
