We share how to create a summer vibe at home, properly decorate the space, and select suitable products

The vacation season is coming to an end, and now is the perfect time to think about how to preserve the memories of summer holidays. Together with designer Anna Kozlova, we create a light maritime atmosphere in the interior of a city apartment.

Anna Kozlova — EXPERT, Interior Designer

Inspiration: Idea for Decoration

Marine themes in interior design have always been and remain popular. City dwellers often want to recreate the images of seaside and distant travels, the atmosphere of harmony and tranquility.

The basis of this project is the functionality of Scandinavian style, a bit of urban urbanism, and maritime decor.

How to Decorate an Interior in Maritime Style?

Wood, "sailcloth" textiles, sand, and sea pebbles

Color Palette

All shades of the sea, sky, and sand

Starting the Work: Creating a Mood Board

To determine the desired atmosphere, I suggest starting with creating a so-called "mood board" or vision board.

The basis of the project is a modern city apartment, so the background for decorating in a maritime style was concrete and brick. A warm tone and pleasant texture of parquet boards remind of yacht decks, coarse linen textiles look like sails, and a large-woven carpet creates the feeling of sea pebbles underfoot. Shades of blue and turquoise in textiles and furniture finishes are the colors of the sea and sky. An accent red-orange adds color to sunset skies.

Transitioning to Implementation

You can find construction materials, decor, plants, and even furniture in one place at good prices — in the "Leroy Merlin" store. So what do we need?

First, let's decide on items for the dining area.

Accent lighting with pendant lights will enhance the dining zone. Contrasting color and asymmetrical hanging add dynamism. Comfortable and compact plastic chairs are a great alternative to dining chairs. A blue Roman curtain made of lightweight, linen-like fabric will add maritime notes. Beige and gray tile with a small pattern recalls a sandy beach. Decorative tile imitating brick masonry will be an excellent accent.

Now let's continue selecting products for the living room zone.

Walls imitating concrete texture make an excellent background for decoration. A black metal chandelier with glass inserts is elegant and minimalist at the same time. Curtains made of coarse fabric with red-brown stripes remind of ship cabin textiles. Parquet boards in honey-colored oak will make the interior warmer. A gray-beige carpet creates the feeling of sea pebbles underfoot. Terracotta-colored sofa cushions are another reminder of colorful sunsets at sea.

Design Hacks for Creating a Maritime Atmosphere

A great idea is small round mirrors in the living room zone. Oars, life rings, and lighthouses are also not out of place. Organize a space for displaying souvenirs from maritime travels. This is not only a decorative element but also pleasant memories. A simple yet effective idea — a tray with candles decorated with ropes and seashells. Don't forget about "maritime" prints on textiles. An original wall hanging with sea dwellers is an excellent decoration for a living room in maritime style. Maritime decor in the bathroom is more relevant than ever. The sound of water and the scent of sea salt can transport you to a seaside.

Arranging Furniture and Decor

Choose minimalist furniture in the selected color palette. Excellent choice is furniture in modern and Scandinavian styles.

Decorate the area above the sofa — I choose wall clocks and posters, but you can opt for mirrors, shelves, or hangings. Also, don't forget to plan the zoning — you can visually divide the space with various floor coverings and rugs.

Plan the placement of light fixtures — ceiling and portable ones, which can be used to create and change the atmosphere of the interior according to your mood. The finishing touch will be provided by textiles and indoor plants.
